Re: Hobby King Mini-Stick 580mm "Electric to Cox" Conversion
Initial thoughts... the 049 looks huge on it. I think I'm planning on a product engine of some sort and aux fuel tank.
Another thought... it may work well with a 020, but I don't have a backplate for one to find out. If someone has one, please let me know.
This may be the 2nd project:

Yeah, that is going to be too much.
You have a TD .020, right?

I thought you just bought one on eBay?
Re: Hobby King Mini-Stick 580mm "Electric to Cox" Conversion
...long story... he refunded my purchase since it wasn't a 010, not quite what I was expecting. I still wanted it... oh well...
Re: Hobby King Mini-Stick 580mm "Electric to Cox" Conversion
That's too bad.
If you ever come across another one, I think it would be a great match.

Re: Hobby King Mini-Stick 580mm "Electric to Cox" Conversion
It does look like its a bit small for a 1/2a, I'm guessing less the 200 sq. in.? I think the .020 would be a better set-up.
Re: Hobby King Mini-Stick 580mm "Electric to Cox" Conversion
Dunno, 580mm is 22.8". That should be in the neighborhood right?
Re: Hobby King Mini-Stick 580mm "Electric to Cox" Conversion
Here is one that has been done already, I just sent him an email to see if I can get pics of his set-up.

Anyone with experience shipping from HK International Warehouse (China??) vs. USA warehouse? This plane doesn't even show when you set your location to US.
There is also a kit version (as in laser cut parts) of this that doesn't show either, as well as several other small ARF's, some just bare airframes, that would be prime for Cox conversion.
I guess they don't stock them in the US warehouse: perception being I guess most Americans (and you Canadians too!) can't be bothered to install their own servos, etc.

Might document the build as you go, could make a good article for the new e-zine. Maybe even the start of a regular series of 'electric to glow' conversion articles, since half-a ARF's seem to be thin on the ground.

At 23" & 6-7" cord, that would make for a pretty small wing and a fast plane, looking at the video, with a sick running reedie it still manages to climb up into the wind pretty easy, 1/2a pylon racers are 200 sq. in.
I guess it depends what your looking for, if you wanted something slower I'd look at that J-3 but again, may just a stock Sure Start w/ a 6x3 might be ok, if you can keep it light with small flight pac, a Tee Dee .020 would work, I guess you'll have to figure out what you have, what you want and wheres the CG gonna end up?

...I do like the 'Stick' and think it would be a fun project!
re: radio?
WingingIt74 wrote:I plan on it
what type radio do you have? some of the new 2.4GHz receivers weigh 4grams without the case. i use 3.7gram servos for 30inch and under planes and 9grams servos for up to 50inch wings. anything needing extra torque will get a 1 1/2 to 2ounce servo. my 6channel RX + 2 servos weighs <2ounces + battery, (4cell 2/3AAA 220mAhr, <1ounce). for larger planes i use a larger battery pack at 1.6ounces, (4cell 4/5AA 700mAhr).
there are many 72MHz radios with micro 4channel RX in the <1ounce range.
there are 2.4GHz 6channel DSM2 RX available in CA from just under $7 each to about $6.50 each in 2x or 4x quantity. shipping was free, but now is $1.60 to $1.90. DSM2/DSMx are current formats for 2.4GHz frequency hopping TX used by Spektrum and Blade, (HP6DSM), transmitters.

Re: Hobby King Mini-Stick 580mm "Electric to Cox" Conversion
I use mostly Spectrum with a couple OrangeRX receivers.
Re: Hobby King Mini-Stick 580mm "Electric to Cox" Conversion
All Good Travis.
Junk the case from the orange and save a few grams.
My Baccaruda (only two hs50's) flys 5 x 3min flights with a 220mah batt then needs a 75/80 mah top up.
It weighs 15 grams. A 700 mah batt is plain unnecessary and pointless weight.
If you're looking to throttle, Bernie's rotating cylinder sleeves work well.
Looking forward to the Utube.

I have a few original cylinder throttles as well as Bernie's throttled sure-start back plate (shown front center of the pic below).
Re: Hobby King Mini-Stick 580mm "Electric to Cox" Conversion
As for the receiver battery, I'm looking into a Life 200mah 6V battery.
Re: Hobby King Mini-Stick 580mm "Electric to Cox" Conversion
Anybody want to buy/trade the Mini Stick? I'm thinking about going a different route.
Re: Hobby King Mini-Stick 580mm "Electric to Cox" Conversion
How much? would you trade for a TD .051 or a Medallion .049?
