An austrian man breaks the sound barrier

An austrian man breaks the sound barrier
oh my goodness, that sure was something!
I felt like I was back in the 50s/60s when mankind was breaking records of speed and height!
It seems to me as if Felix Baumgartner belongs to a breed of men that has gotten quite rare these days. Daredevils.
Your thoughts?

I watched it too, strange to have such live coverage and see everything that could go wrong. They had fog/ice on visor and lots of noise on the radio. Strange that he didn't go through the checklist himself but rather had to get everything over the radio.
Not sure about what it achieves though, and how it would/could improve the redbull drink...

Is 833.9 mph really over mach 1 at an altitude of 100,000 feet? Not near as much air pressure up there.

Re: An austrian man breaks the sound barrier
I think the speed of sound doesn't depend on the pressure, but it probably doesn't make much sense anyway to talk about sound at an altitude were the pressure is about one thousand of the pressure where there are living things. The intensity of the sound depends on the pressure, so the sonic boom might not be much of a problem either.

true that!lousyflyer wrote:Brought to you by the most horrific tasting beverage since Pearl beer.
the reason why he was able to travel faster than the speed of sound was because in the near-space-zone, the density of air molecules
is very sparse and therefor, your terminal velocity increases greatly, as there is almost no air resistance!
science is fun! (sometimes)

Joe Kittinger thought he was drifting away into space when he stepped out in 1960 at 31 miles up, due to the lack of wind or resistance.

Yes, Mach 1.0 at 100,000 is 675.6 mph

Yup, I think the freefall record was purposely left alone, so Joe could keep that one. Read up on Joe,,that guy did some time at the Hanoi Hilton.

I bet your right on that... although Felix stuck to the plan of 5000 ft.

Those of you of a scientic bend on this subject ought to read some of the works of Stephen Hawking the brilliant contempory Britich astro-phyisist.
I especially liked Hawking's "The Universe".

Re: An austrian man breaks the sound barrier
Joe popped his chute at 18,000 feet... Felix popped his at 5,200 feet...
Without getting way over my head in math... it doesn't add up.
Also would like to mention Joe had a stabilizing drogue chute and Felix did not. I bet that would account for some of the time, if not all.

Re: An austrian man breaks the sound barrier
