Cox Engine of The Month
S M A R T not......

S M A R T not......
I know some of you have yet to come over to the 'dark side' of RC but when (I say when not if) you
do....
I imagine the AMA guide book is roughly the same as our BMFA but in case you don't have the same easy to
remember acronyms for me the MOST important before you fly is S.M.A.R.T. before you start.
Switch TX and Model you'd be surprised how often engines get fired up with the model still switched off.
Model Very Important if you're not using Spektrum. The favourite is taking off with the the wrong model
selected banking 'left' and rolling right into the ground cos the ailerons are reversed.
Aerial Bit of a throw back if you're on 2.4 if not, make sure your twig is extended
Rates Make sure your dual/tripple rates switch is correctly selected
Trim Again not really applicable with newer radio's but if you've got slide trims check them.
Finally before taking off check everything is moving and in the correct way/ don't waggle everything and
assume it's all moving in the correct way..
Check Check Check again
Sunday I took off with my beloved Capiche 140 (after checking eveything) rolled 180, pushed forward
performed 2 slow rolls pull up into stall turn back into wind for 2 loverly 4 pointers pull up for vertical climb
and ....not quite as much power as usual so I land for a quick needle tweak.
I've gotten into the habit of landing then flicking airbrakes on to slow the model before the end of strip.
I taxied in, tweaked needle slightly, taxied out and unleashed all my YS160 has.... watched it thunder down the
strip and gently pulled back NOTHING SH*t. I just managed to hit kill switch.
Now I'm not sure how many of you have seen a VERY fast aircraft glued to the ground then hitting the long grass
at the end and carrying on without it's undercarriage through the undergrowth....
Guess who left the airbrakes switched on DOH.
Thankfully 'Cameraman' Glen is a joiner so my Baby is being patched up.
Be warned boys
do....

Re: S M A R T not......
Alot of folks don't do a preflight after a splash-and-go, or tweak-and-go. I am guilty as the next man. But lately I have been better at it.
Watched a really nice P-51 go on a Kamikazie mission a few weeks back, due to the reciever switch not being turned on. The helper fired it up, set it on the field,,then release. A loud "HEY!!" from the pilot, and that was all she wrote. Lifted off smoothly and gracefully, gained a bit of altitude, and did a smooth half roll back to mother earth. Took it all home in a grocery bag.

Airbrakes... I didn't know models had them. How do they work?John Goddard wrote:...I've gotten into the habit of landing then flicking airbrakes on to slow the model before the end of strip.

Ailerons Rusty, both raised to kill lift.
Great to slow down once on the deck.
Not so great when attempting to get airborne.

You can do the same thing to a lesser degree to pick up a little more speed. When I first started flying the Stealth Sport with a Black Widow it was really slow so I tweaked each aileron up just a very few degrees. It helps increase top end speed but also increases landing speed. Now I typically land at five million mph.
