engine runs for short burst
I am new to airplane forum. Recently I bought a vintage Cox trainer tl. I follow the instructions for starting but the engine will only run for 2-3 seconds. What do I try so it will run thru a tank of gas?

Hey Bob....first of all...Welcome to the Forum !!!!
Your engine might not be drawing fuel because of a clogged/blocked fuel line or old goop embedded in the tank. Also have you had the engine apart to check that it is clean inside? You may need to flush the needle valve assembly to make sure that it is clear and allowing fuel to pass.
Old fuel, left in an engine can turn to putty over time, and the engine won't act right until all of it is cleaned out. That's my first thought when working with a new/old plane and engine.
Once again, welcome to the Forum...think you'll like it here !

Agreed. Never try to crank one before disassembling and cleaning it out with denatured alcohol. Take the needle out and clear the orifices, they're very tiny. I use brake parts cleaner with a tube on the can(and wear eye protection), stick it in the needle hole and see if it sprays out of both the pickup nipple and the tiny jet hole inside the air intake. The brake parts cleaner will evaporate almost instantly with no residue and take away any oil with it. Clean out all nooks and crannys, and for your final wipe down of the tank area, use lint free rags, like t-shirt material. Paper towels leave fibers big enough to lodge in your needle valve orifices.Kim wrote:Hey Bob....first of all...Welcome to the Forum !!!!

There are further rebuild instructions stickeyed at the top of in the main Cox Discussion forum and at the http://coxengines.ca/home.php . Here is a good place to start: http://coxengines.ca/files/CMG.pdf . That site as well as www.exmodelengines.com has all the parts, washers, etc. you may need. Here on the forums are a gazillion threads on how to make your own seals as well as other ways ti de-finnick these engines. Here is a very good read: https://www.coxengineforum.com/t753-the-revised-2011-gibeault-mouse-race-program.
I recommend going all the way and removing the crankshaft, because there is an oil groove that feeds it that may very well need clearing out. It's all part of the fun.
Welcome to the forums.
Rusty
EDIT: I'm having trouble getting some of the links I posted to work. Not sure what's up, maybe the site is under maintenence this morning or something.

Rusty,
The reason the links don't work is because of the inclusion of a period at the end of the URL. Here are the links:
Cox shops:
www.coxengines.ca
www.exmodelengines.com
Engine guides:

http://coxengines.ca/files/EOG.pdf (Engine Operating Guide)
http://coxengines.ca/files/TSC.pdf (Troubleshooting Chart)
http://coxengines.ca/files/CMG.pdf (Care and Maintenance Guide)

So How's it going, Bob? Have you had a chance to tinker with it yet?

Re: engine runs for short burst
Welcome to the forum Bob. If your engine has never been run, or has not been run for several years, you should take it apart and clean it before attempting to run it.
The goo inside has to be removed for the engine to be happy.
You've come to the right place for answers.
