Cox Engine of The Month
P-40 engine..........it runs

P-40 engine..........it runs
as expected.
Used the last of my Cox 35%, set up my Globee for 3 propeller operation, attached the fire, four turns out. Primed and flipped, backfired and nearly spun off the prop. Ok, encouraged I tightened the prop screw and flipped again, started and stopped. Cylinder loose. I hate tightening these down using just the glow head but I would rather that than risk a nick or distortion of the thin wall cylinder. Been there.
Couple more flips started rich running in the proper direction, leaned out to full chat and pointed the Globee. Nothing, nada. Shows 0 and never changed. Old reliable never had let me down before, maybe the lens is dirty.
Happy, satisfied that it runs and runs well, it will be disassembled cleaned and put back on the P-40 making it complete once again. Only thing that disturbs me is that black propeller. Stands out like a sore thumb. Going to paint one propeller matching tan and put it on. Another black will go in the box with it.
Not going to attempt to remove the HC head, really no reason to and it would prove nothing. It will go back on the plane exactly as I received it, old gaskets and all. But minus a bunch of grime and burned on castor.

Congrats on the run! However, it is of no surprise to me that it ran good for you. The engines understand teh care and dedication you give them, and this is their way of saying 'Thanks'!

Prop is supposed to be black...but NOT a square tipped one.

Hmmm... I didn't notice that it was a left-handed prop. I wonder if that helps line tension. My inverted engine P-40 just happens to be in sight, and glancing at it shows the original right-handed prop. I've always wondered which prop has more torque, left-handed square tip or right-handed round tip three blader.

Re: P-40 engine..........it runs
Yes, the test prop was a left hand safety tip.
The installed "forever" prop is conventional but painted along with a spare black prop in the box. But there is a problem. The spinner is not of the snap on type like on Testors "Flyem's" but requires a special prop or some kind of adapter. Any help?
Searched the net and came up with this. Not much help:
Edit add:
Guess this would work, robbed off my Cox Corsair, but it doesn't seem kosher.

Re: P-40 engine..........it runs
The 1971 parts listing shows the prop with a screw and “snap on” spinner, looks to be inserted into the prop.
The Corsair and others like PT-19 use a prop stud with prop nut that retains the prop and the spinner slides over and pops on the extended prop nut, like on your Corsair picture
Whatever way you do it is OK with me!

Re: P-40 engine..........it runs
Thanks Rene, you always come up with something helpful.
Seems it uses the same prop/spinner combo as the Stuka. Neither provides the secure connection for the spinner that the snap-on Testors do. I think that the spinner could separate quite easily while running, at least on this one. No matter, I'm going with it.
I could get used to the black propeller, but it's going back in the box with the tan one on it. Proper black prop and accessories will go along in a package.
Thanks for your help.

I was hoping Eric, but not so. I had to paint another propeller. The spinner will only snap on the prop with the recess in the hub and it requires the very short screw with washer. This particular propeller has just the hint of a rim on it to accept the spinner, where the standard 3 blade does not.
I have to thank my son for this find. First he found the plane at a flea market with box but minus the engine, then he found the engine on ebay by searching just Thimble Drome and P-40. $9,95 and I was the only bidder. I'm sure if Cox had appeared in the ad it would have had many more. Less than $30 all in for everything.

Re: P-40 engine..........it runs
Nice early one!! I believe Cox had to change the name to Warhawk at some point. The spinners do fall off on the Stuka, Miss America easily.
The very early issue had a weak bell crank and was changed, I believe they changed the canopy also. Still looking for one of those and the little manz to drop in the cockpit. I believe it was General Chennault.
