Watching model train videos

Watching model train videos
I just watched a few model train videos on YouTube. Looks like a whole lot of $$$ for stuff you have to really pretend a lot to play with. Pretend houses and pretend farms with pretend cows, pretend PA announcements and however much other pretend stuff you mostly look at. Even when you make it go, you can just stand there with your hands in your pockets watching them go around... listening to recorded engine turbine noises pretending they're real. Man, if that was my hobby... I'd wake up crying every morning.
Sorry for my rant. I hope I'm not upsetting any of our members that like to play with trains. Slow Saturday and I just have nothing better to do. I did go out into the wetness and fix the gaskets on my Norvel and straighten up the work table. I'll be glad when my new engine test stand gets here.

I don't play with trains but Rusty look at your rant sure it's great and I get it.
But you couldn't go out and fly because it was raining.
Now what's an indoor hobby........
Oh yeah trains lol
But yeah 1/2a all the way, our engine noises be real.

Re: Watching model train videos
Well, LOL...I used to do trains! I still have a few big shelves filled with HO scale train crap in the back room. I wasn't that huge into it to a point where I had to mount everything on a piece of plywood on a table but I used to set it up all over the basement or family room. Had a bunch of little houses, telegraph poles, that rubbery crap that is supposed to look like bushes, trees, little plastic cars and trucks, a bunch of different train cars and a few engines. All of it was Great Northern, Burlington Northern and Burlington Northern Santa Fe trains and train cars because my grandpa worked for those railroads. That was the main reason why I messed with the stuff. I have yet to get a Cox train accessory, I do keep my eyes open when I do see train stuff.
Re: Watching model train videos
I got an HO scale train set for Christmas one year. Set up the track and ran it on the crapet. The carpet fuzz ruined the brushes of the locomotive motor in one night.
I was more interested in airplanes so It really didn't matter that much.

Looks like fun and has that great noise/smell!
Re: Watching model train videos
I like trains --- had an 8'x8' layout growing up. I used one corner for building planes. Summer time: planes; winter time: trains.
The electronics available for trains today are pretty slick where you can control multiple trains on the same trackset with handheld controllers. Secondly, if you enjoy detail scale building, HO construction can be rewarding. I'm not necessarily defending trains, but there are a lot of the same skills involved in both hobbies.

With trains, it's all about the thrill of the build. With planes, it's the thrill of the unknown.

Re: watching model train videos.
I do trains and airplanes, both involve building, which I enjoy. Although, airplanes do involve more rebuilding, which I don't enjoy.

Re: Watching model train videos
I know, I know, I was just frustrated this afternoon. As a kid I played with trains too until the carpet fuzz choked them up like Godsey's. Looking at those hermits on YouTube today inspired me to be happy that, small as they are, my planes are actually real airplanes, fast and somewhat dangerous, completely dependent on my physical reflexes to survive a flight. I don't doubt the meticulous skills train hobbyists have. I went out and played in my Toy Shop, as my wife calls it, after I posted the train thread. After all, who am I to belittle anyone's hobby when we're just plum ate up with couch taters these days. I shouldn't be casting asparagus on anyone's entertainment.

Seen that one before, but always like seeing it again. 13 kilometers of track astounds me. The Airport is a new addition and pretty neat.

That's actually one I can appreciate. I have it in my YouTube favorites.
