One of those mornings

One of those mornings
I had a chance to go flying this morning and it didn't go as expected. I started out with the Stealth Sport. I fueled it and connected the battery. It fired right up on the first flip and ran great. I tossed the plane out and it started flying away beautifully when I noticed "funny" roll control. About 30 seconds later I lost all roll control. I was in about a 70 degree bank with no ailerons and no way to kill the engine so I flipped the elevator to high rates and stalled the plane to get it to drop. I did not have enough altitude to recover and restall so it hit with a pretty good thud. The damage was surprisingly light and should be a quick and easy repair. As I walked to the plane I was moving the transmitter sticks and watching the elevator move and hearing the aileron servo move. Upon opening the fuse and looking for a cause I was really surprised. The aileron pushrod had come off of the servo control horn. In the picture you can see the locking mechanism for the E-Z connector laying in the bottom of the fuse. I have never seen this one before.
Anyhow, no big deal. I have my DNU and Hummer to play with. So, I fueled up the DNU and connected the battery. This engine is really dependable. It almost always starts on the second flip. Not today. It didn't have any intentions of running. After about 10 minutes of Mickey Mousing around with it I decided to check the battery on another glow plug....DEAD BATTERY! No problem, I still have two new in the carton batteries for the glow igniter....but they're dead too. So is the 12V battery in my field box. I was half considering taking the battery from my truck but decided not to. I just packed up, bought some new batteries on the way home and put all the batteries on charge when I got home.
At least I got to enjoy the blue sky, sunshine and freah air.

Re: One of those mornings
I can relate to those kinds of days. Sorry, but I'm glad to know equipment failure puts other people's planes into the ground too. When the nose weights popped off my Baby Streak, it took fiberglass and epoxy to fix the tail. After that it gave me the best wildest flight of the season.

I think that it is just part of the hobby. Cheating the failures and every other bad possibility is part of what makes it so exciting and fun. If I didn't want my planes to get hurt I wouldn't fly them then. That would be boring, though.

Sorry your morning didn't go as well as hoped.
Realistically, given the vibration levels, the dirt these engines ingest, the less than stellar landings, etc....., it's a wonder these planes fly with as few problems as they do.

Amen to that. It was still a good morning, just different than anticipated.
