.049 Black Widow gummed up
Dear Cox Engine Enthusiasts,
Twenty-Two years ago my boys lost interest in model control line planes. They discovered women. We hung up the planes in the basement. My first grandson was born in June and I felt it was time to get back into the fun.
Three Cox .049 Black Widow engines were on the planes. The engines are in good shape, but are gummed up. I did not want to try the “Old Time” fixes of soaking them in diesel fuel or Coca-Cola. Does anyone have a solution to un-stick these great little engines?
Best regards,
Full Moon Boat Work

You can apply heat to the cylinder and squirt in some fuel into the exhaust ports. The heat will begin to soften up the castor and allow it to move. The methanol (alcohol) in the fuel will liquify and thin some of the castor and add lubrication and make things easier to move. Be careful doing it. If it really does not want to go then do not force it. Move it a little bit at a time until it gets easier. I have heat alone get them freed up. I would still oil them up so they would not beat themselves to death on the first run.
And welcome to the forum!

Welcome to the forum!
Cox reed valve engines are amazingly resilient, but 22 years is a long time to sit, especially if they have old fuel residue in them.
I'd take them apart and soak them in alcohol or fresh fuel, oil them with 3-in-1, put them back together and try them.
Good luck!

Taking them completely apart and thoroughly cleaning each part is really the best way to do it.
It's very easy to do provided you use the correct tools and suggestions from members here.
These engines are very simple and durable even 22 Yrs sitting idle won't slow them down.

A few new gaskets and a good cleaning and they will run like champs again. There is a plethora of info on this site for getting them up and running again.

For soaking my far and away prefrence is Hoppe's #9 gun cleaning solvent available at your local gun store or an outlet like Cabela's. I buy it by the quart because I use it very frequently of guns and Cox engines
Additionally I recommend the appropriate sized Cox wrench for disassembly/assembly work.
DO NOT use common pliers or you'll very likely cause permanent damage to your engine. "Tool marks" devalue your engine considerably.
Use the "Trouble Shooting guides at: www.coxinternational.com

Re: .049 Black Widow gummed up
Couldn't agree more with SuperDave on the Hoppe's #9.
This stuff is great.
Amazon has it here. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00109AAN2/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
Figure in shipping and compare against your local gun shop's price.
If you have a Cabella's nearby, it'll be cheapest there.

Two months is too young to use as an excuse! Now three months, that's a different story.MoonDaddy wrote:Dear Cox Engine Enthusiasts,

You have been given some excellent solutions. I would try the easiest first. Squirt some fuel in the exhaust and see if it will turn over. (Good use for old fuel if you have any left.) Hoppes #9 or any gun cleaner is also an excellent choice.Three Cox .049 Black Widow engines were on the planes. The engines are in good shape, but are gummed up. If it does not turn over, try the heat from a hair dryer on the head and the crankcase around the crankshaft. Keep heat away from plastic parts (and tank). Also remember to wear some protective gloves to handle the hot parts.
If you can turn it over you can put fuel in the tank and try to run it or disassemble it and clean all parts. Use new gaskets if you have them and be careful to not lose the little seal between the intake on the backplate and the tank.
Good luck and welcome back.
