Re: Dragonfly Build Thread
It's been a long time since I've used nyrod. It used to come in a somewhat stiff version and a more flexible version. The stiffer type was better for long runs because it needed less reinforcement. Sometimes you could just flex it a bit in the opposite direction to get out the bends. I got it in bulk one time and it came tied in a roll. From then on I bought individual packages that came straight and with connectors.
If you use heat be VERY careful. If you shrink the outer tube in any part it will cause a bind and render the tube useless.
A question about plywood...is 48" not available to you or did you just already have the 24" sheets? In the USA we can get 48" birch ply from Balsa USA (and probably other sources) in widths up to 12" and thicknesses down to 1/64". The lite ply (Poplar) appears to come in a minimum thickness of 1/8" though.
I would want to avoid the scarf joint if possible.
You have a nice looking plane coming along. That Max-10 should provide you with good service. Keep us updated.

Hey George, 48" ply IS available here, but due to the fact that I have to get all my materials by mail order the shipping cost would have been exorbitant to say the least!
I already had the shorter stuff so I used that, I agree that the join is not ideal, but it won't affect anything, it's probably stronger than the rest of the sheet, and the tiny added weight doesn't signify on a model of this size. In the article that came with the plan the designer suggests that you persuade someone else to built at the same time, since a sheet of 48" ply provides enough for two models!

Re: Dragonfly Build Thread
Mitch,
Plans are available from the AMA plans service:
from MODEL BUILDER mag, designed by BOB LEE $20 plan = 60112
George
Edit: Although the cost may seem high, it would probably cost that much to enlarge it from an online plan. It's a BIG plane!

If you want the plans, Mitch, I have them as a set of .jpg tiles, ready for printing on your computer printer, but, be warned, it's 30 sheets to print and tape together, plus another 4 for the build article from the magazine!
In addition, it is not a simple build, the wire bending and soldering for the cabane struts has to be accurate (had trouble there myself) the wing is in two halves, joined by rods, but you still need at least a 4' long building board for them and the fuselage.

Re: Dragonfly Build Thread
The wing is now complete, apart from the tubes and dowels to join the centre section
Undercarriage completed, there is a LOT of wire in this model!

Re: Dragonfly Build Thread
Excellent build, Wilf; just excellent.
Your wing looks great, but I certainly don't envy covering the under camber.

Re: Dragonfly Build Thread
Airframe is now complete, apart from a few details
Next job will be the installation of the controls, servos etc. followed by covering and finishing.
I intended to cover the whole model traditionally in tissue and dope, but I am having a serious problem with obtaining tissue. It is available, but the companies who have it want ludicrous amounts of money for shipping. The best I have been able to find wants £5.50 ($9.00) to post 6 sheets of tissue to me from England! I mean, what does tissue weigh? and how much packaging does it need! Since I refuse to pay such rip-offs, completion of the Dragonfly may be seriously delayed.

Re: Dragonfly Build Thread
No, my days of chasing models (Of any description!) are long gone, got to be either radio or tied on strings for me now!
Thanks for the tissue info, unfortunately that's for white tissue only, I need coloured Japanese tissue for the Dragonfly to match the already-covered tail unit.

Re: Dragonfly Build Thread
Well, after a long break a bit more progress, trouble is, other little things, like getting the house painted, keep interrupting the build!
All I've managed to do lately is design and finalise the camera position
I've had to mount the camera servo on the little pylon in order to move it out of the way of the control servos, despite the size of the Dragonfly the fuselage is not very wide, and has surprisingly little space inside
I've arranged the camera to look outboard when the servo's neutral, and I can turn it to look fore or aft via the aileron stick on the Tx.

Re: Dragonfly Build Thread
I had posted a comment, not realizing how far the build had progressed. ( didn't see the thread had another page). Coming too late like that made it seem like criticism rather than "maybe think about this" .
