Cox Engine of The Month
Polish an engine or leave it be

Polish or not to polish?
Polish an engine or leave it be
I bought a can of the mothers mag wheel polish. It does wonders to dull tanks and crankcases. But before I go and continue on with any more engines I want to get your opinion. Leave the patina on it like old knives and guns or make it shine like a chrome bumper?

I enjoy polishing up old dog engines. There is a lot of satisfaction in turning a nasty old Babe Bee into a beautiful piece. I don't think its value would be effected like that of an old gun or knife, unless it was a rare original engine.
I love this stuff!!!

Well... I like the original machined look over a shiny buffed mirror look but I like that look much more than a trashed, tarnished maybe lightly corroded look. I took a old babe bee tank that was very tarnished and stuck it in a drill and while spinning, I took some very fine sandpaper and it turned out looking like the original machined look.
Re: Polish an engine or leave it be
yep, looks good doesn't it, and it was probably faster then polishing it.

The drill method works well on glow heads and non vented tanks, but not so well with the vented ones. I love Mothers.

Really? How does one attach the head to a drill? Glow head refinishing is something I have not perfected.

150 Garnet Sandpaper by Gatorgrit is what I use. Make sure you tighten up the chuck on the Dremel. Glow heads make danderous UFO's.

When you polish alum or any metal for that fact you make it stronger. It alignes the molecules and removes minute stress risers.
Talked to my buddy who workes for Boeing and has a PHD in engineering and he confirmed it. First heard that from my college teacher and then from my engine builder.
