1/2A Control Handles
Figured I'd post these photos of my favorite 1/2A handles in case they're not accessible to some members. If you have access to basic woodworking tools, you can print out these photos...maybe experiment with the enlarge or reduce function 'till your ruler matches the one in the photo...and use them for patterns to cut your own from scrap 1/4 or 3/8's ply.
My absolute favorite is the classic Cox "D", so much so that I'm gonna cut one from some aluminum plate, and use it on my larger models.
We also flew a lot on the red Goldberg handles and so I included it. Use the middle holes on either, and you'll be "in the ballpark" for everything from learning to fly thru aerobatics.
You could fancy them up a bit with thicker handles, but the basic flat plate works great for me...
There's another Cox control handle with a flat spot for your thumb...I don't like it as much...but if a member wants a pattern of it also, I'll dig it out of my stuff and post it's photo here.

Re: 1/2A Control Handles
Not sure...they show up on mine, so I figured everybody was getting them. Might try another computer.
Failing that, I can Email them to you as an attachment. I'll also put them in my album here...maybe a different route will help.

Seeing them here fine on iPad. Could be your IT dept is blocking images?

Some images don't come through...I can see anything else on the 'net (imagine that!). I can pull up the images in the gallery, though...I'll check them out at home.

if you do, look under extras, then options/preferences.
go to thhe "content" page and click the exceptions button to the right of "display graphics"
if the forum is on that list, throow it out.
(i probably don#t have the names of the menus right, because i use the german firefox)
i hope you can find it.

Re: 1/2A Control Handles
After spending 21 hours over a week of evenings, I rebuilt the whole nose with a redesigned firewall and brace system in my Li'l Jumpin Bean. During my first test flight this happened:
It slammed nose in from a wingover at full power! What a way to test a repair. That was my favorite handle and I had used it since I was a kid. What a time to break. I got a new red Sig handle from Bernie now. I like the fit, but I haven't hooked it up yet. I've been using one of those silly child sized blue Cox handles in the mean time.
Bye the way, my work held up. There was a crack further back on the fuse, but a little CA fixed that.

Re: 1/2A Control Handles
I just sanded my Goldberg handle out about two weeks ago and storage boxed it for when the shop room is ready for some building.
I bought two of them, one to keep on a card and the other to fly with.
I remember my first one long ago how I had to sand it a little, and re-glue a spot to close the joint all the way. Huge amounts of flash on this handle I had to knock down. I might even have to clear out the string holds even. I was kinda bummed out to see that.
I have yet to finish sand it. I just knocked it down with a rough board. I was taking a break from re-boxing a lot of my hobby stuff to go into the new room

Good point on closing up the slots, if I fly this handle again I'm gonna do it. Also a good idea to keep an eye on the middle where the wedge pinches the line

Re: 1/2A Control Handles
I think it had been cracked for a long time, gradually getting ready to let go. I was so mad I could spit. After all that work and a crash like that. It was very old. Plastics weren't then quite what they are now. See the swirls in the green color, that isn't by design, that's uneven polymerization.Kim wrote:HOLY CATS !!!

Yeah, and the "Spider Wire" I use is so fine that it will jump right out of them. I always use the middle holes anyway, so there is no reason not to close them up.

Re: 1/2A Control Handles
Now I see the pics...for some reason the work computer blocks certain images. Not even a "red x".
I just got one of the Cox handles, with a Cox battery box I bought. The handle is untouched, as far as I can tell.

Re: 1/2A Control Handles
The best 1/2A handle I have come across yet is the "Renger 1/2A Handle" designed by the man who designed the Black Widow ie Larry Renger. These are available from RSM Distribution. You can also get a .15 version.

Re: 1/2A Control Handles
Cheap 1/4" ply handle that fits my hand while giving my pinky a place to rest. And I can wrap the lines around it for storage. Version 1.0

Re: 1/2A Control Handles
I need a place to rest my pinky because when I do outside loops with the small handle(I hold it backwards), the line sometimes wraps around my little digit. I fingertip the handle anyway, so I must stick my finger out like a lady sipping a Mint Julep.
I have also hooked the lines on the outside adjustment peg in the middle of a maneuver. I prefer the ones with the peg on the inside for that reason. The only hard crash my Li'l Satan ever had was a result of the Down line hooking on the peg. All the UP in the world couldn't pull it out.

Re: 1/2A Control Handles
Yes, you are right about that little peg, it will have to go. Version 1.0 is deemed a failure without trials.
The shape of the handle was enlarged from the Cox version and one of my peeves about that handle is the peg being right on my knuckle.
The pinky groove changes the feel of the handle entirely.

Re: 1/2A Control Handles
Here's a pic of a simple mod I did to the Goldberg handle I did a number of years ago, works really well. Also shown is a wooden version of the plastic 'combat' handle designed/marketed by George Aldrich back in the early eighties, one my favorite for smaller planes.

Re: 1/2A Control Handles
The "mod" to the good ol' Goldberg handle only quickens the response to input so beginers should use it that way ONLY when the have CL experience.
I've flown 1/2 A almost exclusively with a Goldberg handle for more years than I care to remember.
