Cox Venom bought accidentally
I must be very luck because I'm not too smart. I was looking for a good glider / trainer to teach my 7 year old son to fly so I started looking at the classifieds. I ended up purchasing a sailplane (already built), radio, heat Iron, heat gun and all applicable parts to make this plane fly for $60. Oh yea, one more thing. The plane came with a power pod with a Cox engine. The seller says he never used the power pod. I went strait to the field with my son and flew it 4 times with the power pod. Came home and after doing some research I found out the Cox engine was in fact the .049 Venom. It appeared to have never been ran before I got it. Not a scratch on it. I had no idea what this engine was. I assumed it was a Texaco.
It was a little temperamental at first but after i got it running I enjoyed the flying. It got the glider up in the air very well. Even hit some thermal action on one flight.
The question I have is should I box it up as a collectors item or keep running it as a power pod. From what I'm reading a power pod is the furthest thing from what this engine was designed for. What if I crash the plane? I would be pretty [bleep] off if I damaged the engine.

LUCKY! Wow, that is a nice one! A Black Widow would likely work just fine on that glider and a TD .049 would probably perform close to the same as the Venom on the glider. Use it if you wish. The one thing you really have to watch on the Venom is the weak piston. I guess there are some Venoms out there without the lightened pistons so the only to really know is to check it out. The engine is closer to being a collectors item but it was made to be used. If you don't want the Venom, you could give it to me (LOL) or sell it for $120+ on here or eBay.
What number cylinder do you have? You should check the crankshaft to make sure that it is a real Venom.

Re: Cox Venom bought accidentally
yeah, if i were you, i'd just detach that engine from the mount and get an ebay widow for 30 bucks or so.

Or if you use it again, Please break it in first. It might be too late for that, but I'd recommend doing it anyway. That's probably why it was temperamental at first, the piston and cylinder didn't fit right and the crank bearings were running dry.

Wow, a hot rod barn find, in a sense. For better or worse, it is broke in for the most part. I would probably keep the needle setting on the slightly rich side till you get a few oz's of fuel thru it.

Nice Score,
Not sure if you posted an intro yet. Head on over to the intro section and tell us about yourself!
What's your Cox experience? Long time fan? Looking forward to hearing more from you!
As to your Venom, as Mud suggested they were built to fly and since your investment was not too much you could continue to have fun with it.

Re: Cox Venom bought accidentally
At full scream, any Cox engine will get more run time on a tank of gas than the Venom. If it's a full blown Venom, that baby will turn about 22,000 RPM in the air if I remember correctly. The BW is the next fastest and more durable alternative.

If you get a venom to turn tht they is a VERY high chance you will punch a hole in the top of the piston.RknRusty wrote:At full scream, any Cox engine will get more run time on a tank of gas than the Venom. Re: Cox Venom bought accidentally
A new Venom in box unrun complete will get $250.00-$300.00 depends on what elase is available. What you use it for a B/Widow is fine. If its working for you enjoy it. Once run it will never be new again.

Re: Cox Venom bought accidentally
Hey guys thanks for the info.
When I said it was "temperamental" I should have said hard to start. Once it fired up it was fine. I did run it rich.
It ran backwards on one attempt but I hear thats common. Also it did this low rpm chug a lot. Not sure what this was. I had to pinch the nose cone with my fingers to get it to stop then try and fire it again.
I read that the fuel pick up on these engines are set up for control line flying. Do I need to modify the fuel pick up to get more flight time?
You should have seen the look on my son's face when this engine fired up. He had never heard one of these run. It was classic.

Re: Cox Venom bought accidentally
It's your call, but I would sell it and buy a nice Black Widow or Golden Bee. The pistons in Venoms are fragile and can fall apart.
Position the fuel pickup tube at the bottom of the tank. (6:00)
Nice find.

Re: Cox Venom bought accidentally
Venom is hi-performance engine. They break if pushed hard which you need not do. You don't need to run it to rich as its made to wind up. Just don't push it. All reedies will run backwards and thats why they have a spring starter..use it. The engine was designed by people who knew what they were doing. This and Killer Bee were made as most powerful reed engines Cox ever made.

speaking of these motors running in the wrong direction. is this harmful to them? someone at the hobby shop told me that it is not good for a motor like these to run backwards. i do not think it harms them in anyway, and i think that it is just plain awesome and funny

I don't believe it is harming it too much to run it backwards. I know that if I "break in" a babe bee in one direction and then go to run it in the other direction, it doesn't spin as many rpms as it did in the original direction. The one major thing that it would be harmed is the driveplate to crankcase contact (if the engine is pushing), use a brass driveplate or put a thrust washer between the case and plate. Another thing is you want air to be blowing on the cylinder and if a prop is pushing air, it isn't cooling as much as it would be with the air being blown on the cylinder. This was a problem for some of the car engines. Just running them once in awhile backwards when on the ground doesn't really do anything.

cool thanks for the input, ill try to get a brass drivplate or thrust washer between the case and driveplate

Re: Cox Venom bought accidentally
Sorry for the hijack.....
Mitch, keep on mind that it works both ways. If you remove the slop up front with a thrust washer you may create drag where the crank web contacts the case. Something to keep in mind.
Or you could just run it it the right direction and not worry about it.

yeah lol, i always try to get the engine started the right way but that is not always possible with out a spring starter (i have one, just dont use it often because i dont want my fingers in the prop)

Re: Cox Venom bought accidentally
When you run Cox engines sooner or later you get cut. Oil on hands and then grip slips even with a spring. Like using x-acto knives, modeling pins you are going to get zapped. Not if just..when. Just part of the fun.

Re: Cox Venom bought accidentally
I just fried the glow plug on the Venom. I didn't have my glasses on and plugged the glow wires into the 12 volt starter plug on my field kit. Oops. Is there something special about this glow plug? Does anyone have a part number or know where I can get another one?

It is a high compression tee fee head with 2 fins
I think the part number is 1702.

You can find them
Cox International
or
Ex Model Engines
You can also find both Matt (Ex Model Engines) and Bernie (Cox International) as well as other sellers selling them on eBay.

You aren't the first one to do that!
You can get just about everything for that Venom minus the original piston.

Venom guts
I took the Venom apart today. There are slots in the inside of the cylinder. I tried to capture them in the picture bit it didnt turn out very good.
Hopefully you guys can tell by the picture if it truly a Venom and not a clone.
