Re: FLY POWER!!!
I tried it with horse flies and it failed.
I glued their feet on and then learned that their feet must be left free to move.
Glue their abdomen on.
It is pretty cruel when you think about it though.

Re: FLY POWER!!!
Think of all the garbage flys consume. Yes we all hate them, but they have a place in nature.

Re: FLY POWER!!!
some one on this forum once said a wise thing they are born in poop every day after that is a gift matchsticks.com/Fly_Matchstick_Airplane.htm here's the link to the plans
"from the website Launch the fly matchstick airplane. It should fly like a charm, and, far from being cruel to the flies, you'll be teaching them a new and valuable thing, one that brings us to the virtue of this exercise. For we see that while flies think a lot alike, have a great deal in common, share many of the same hopes and dreams, they never act in concert, as a team, with regard for the worth of other, neighboring flies until forced to by grim circumstance - as, for example, when they are harnessed to fly and either first experience the exhilaration of high-altitude cooperation or die. Redeemed by such a critical choice, they'll soar like a glider, race like a Stealth, and, when overflying a barnyard or kennel, turn into a wicked-awesome dive bomber."

Re: FLY POWER!!!
Me and my best friend Guy (passed away) did this maany years ago when we were still in High School. used toothpics and made a double wing covered in a single layer of Saran wrap. we would trap the flys, then glue the abdomen to the fuse, feed them a little dab of honey, and set the whole contraption aloft. Really amazing how long they could stay up, and gain altitude.
Don't feel to bad for them, they are not an endangered species. the common Brundlefly or housefly carries a extreme amount of germs and disease, that can be days deadly to a infant.

I guess it's not the best way to go out but, they are flies. No shortage of those around.
I saw this on television once and it's amazing how much power they can muster.

Thank you Sir Mitch, I appreciate that.
Use some little 1/16" or 1/32" balsa square or round stick, it will be lighter than a Douglas Fir toothpick. Saran wrap works good for a covering, a bit tougher than tissue paper. You have to get the power to weight ratio correct, lol, find the fat flys, they have better endurance than the newborn's.

Re: FLY POWER!!!
Quick question, what type of glue should you use to adhere the fly?
I was thinking CA but, you can't kick it to cure fast as the heat might kill the fly or maim it to the point where it won't do anything.

Re: FLY POWER!!!
For the life of me, I can't remember what we used. I think it was a pin tip dot of the crappy CA in the white metal squeeze tubes. I think we glued there feet to the mini mount we made. One you toss them in the air they beat there wings, natural reaction.
