Look at this little jewel
This is Mudhen's RR1, early model from what little I know. He has entrusted it to me to complete the break-in by giving it some serious air time. I promised no gopher diving with this baby.
Here it is on the test bench. The dang thing spins 19,000 RPM with a 5.25x4 prop. Unfreakinbelievable. I read where the RR1 performed comparably to a Babe Bee. Hmmm, not this one, it'll blow the wings off a Babe... with a muffler. Tach race entrants, y'all better be good this year. I'll be there too.
Sweet

Re: Look at this little jewel
After I get practiced up and back in competent flying form, I'm going to mount it on the Li'l Jumpin Bean. I was worried about it being too underpowered to use the stooge, but I better stake another safety line to it so it doesn't drag it away while I run out to pick up the lines.

Props from different makers are very different in their load, have you tried the same prop on a babe bee?

Re: Look at this little jewel
I was running it in that video of the final test of my rebuilt Black Widow. But not on a Babe. It's a Top-Flite. Are they not being manufactured for 1/2A any more? I like the ones I have, but they are not the sizes I want.Surfer_kris wrote:Props from different makers are very different in their load, have you tried the same prop on a babe bee?

Re: Look at this little jewel
No I don't think top-flites nylon props are being made anymore. Graupners and cox are the same as before while there is now also APC with a very nice series of different prop sizes. Their 5.7x3 is a good match for .049 engines but the props are a little brittle and brake easily if they touch ground.

Re: Look at this little jewel
I really like the Graupner props and the cox ones but not so much APC ones as the said they are brittle and also sharp and sometimes when flick starting engines especially diesel (I have found) they can sometimes nip you and a nip from a cox prop is nothing like the gash and APC will give you.Surfer_kris wrote:No I don't think top-flites nylon props are being made anymore. Re: Look at this little jewel
Mine touch the ground too much for that. The Top-Flite is pretty rugged like the Cox. I have no idea how old mine are either. Except for one well punished 5.25x4 all I have is a couple of 6x4. The Cox are easy to cut down. That's what I've been doing. I gotta do some prop shopping, and a balancer too. I'm thinking about the Top-Flite magnetic one.
EDIT: I get enough nicks without buying dangerous props.

Who was it that said APC was an acronym for Awefully Painful Cut!?!?!?
I like the we yellow props from Bernie, I now use them on .020,.015,.030 and .059 engines!

Re: Look at this little jewel
It took me a half hour to balance one of those tough little buggers today. That was my afternoon project, balancing props, and cutting a couple down. I'm starting to really like 5.5x3 Cox props. For 35' anyway.nitroairplane wrote:Who was it that said APC was an acronym for Awefully Painful Cut!?!?!?

I have one of the Top-Flite balancers and it works great. Easy to use too.
$20 most everywhere, but $8-$10 shipping.
Here's the manual.

I have this little guy for balancing, and use the same trick when doing so. couldn't be easier and I have spun props hard and fast with that style of balancing.

I also have the Top Flight one for my bigger props.
Always balance your props,,all props. Your crankshaft, crankcase, ect, along with free rpm's will thank you later.

Nice vid but I wonder how long that piece of Scotch tape will last in flight?PV Pilot wrote:I have this little guy for balancing, and use the same trick when doing so. couldn't be easier and I have spun props hard and fast with that style of balancing.

It would work with our props if you degreased it good enough. Brake parts cleaner should do it. I use sandpaper and elbow grease though.

I scotch tape a weight on the wingtip of the Li'l Satan. It holds surprisingly well. And a piece over where I dropped my exacto knife through the wing on the Bean too. It's held for months.nitroairplane wrote:Yeah, I am sure our fuel dissolves Most tape.

A very good question,, I have been tape balancing since "06" and none has flew off yet. I have a OS 55 AX on my Eagle II (avatar pic) with a 11" prop and that tape is still stuck there, granted I used a wider piece of HD super sticky box tape on that one. I think with it being wrapped around the leading edge of the prop helps to hold it better, with the airflow mashing to the prop. I swipe off the blades with CRC quick dry electrical cleaner for a quick surface prep.

Re: Look at this little jewel
I guess I'll try tape then. It'll save a bunch of elbow grease. Ind I'm not wild about changing the shape of the blades when I sand them anyway.

I like CA as it can be added or taken away quickly and smoothed easier. When done it's hardly noticeable.

Yup, did the CA trick for awhile also. Smearing on the thick stuff with a q-tip.
The tape is so quick tho', stick a piece on, keep trimming until it balances, then fold it over.

Re: Look at this little jewel
I like to scrape the back side of the prop with a razer blade or a ground hacksaw blade to balance. Tape ??? not a good idea for glow model props.I also scrape plastic props for rubber models like a Jetco R.O.G.'s and the Phantom Flash. We fly these rubber models indoors and can reduce the weight of the plastic props by half .On wood props I scrape and sand then refinish and balance again. If you don't seal up a wood prop it 's balance can change from humidity or fuel .
