Simple Gliders

Simple Gliders
I’ve built a few….. This one is Thermic 20 designed by Frank Zaic…. Taken from his Model Glider Design yearbook, Copyright 1944 …. Easy to scale up from instructions in the book….Practically no support equipment needed… Simple hand launch or light catapult ….I’ve had a few simple gliders get caught in lift and just fly away…. Kind of bitter sweet but awesome to see happen …. Good excuse to build another…. Got the main blocks roughed out so now a bunch of carving and sanding…..

Re: Simple Gliders
These designs look simple but in reality these take a long time to build correctly. If you want to learn how to sand properly, these are the models to learn on. In addition, whenever I build these, I like to take 1/32" strips of spruce or pine and glue them to the leading edge in order to prevent nick damage. While many will think this isn't a necessity, it prolongs the lifespan of the model immensely. In addition, substituting lightweight bass or spruce for the fuse also makes the experience enjoyable.
My first experience was the Thermic B by Jetco. My dad gave the kit to me and the first thing he said was read the instructions. When your done, read them again. I tore into the model and cut two of the same sides for the airfoil not realizing there was a left and a right. He was quite mad at me. Not because I cut it wrong but because I didn't follow his direction. I ended up throwing the kit away. Fast forward 30 years and I was devoted to building another. This time I threw the kitchen sink at it. I doped it with red and yellow tissue and it was beautiful. My son launched it and it was aloft for close to 7 minutes in which I could see it. It then flew up and away never to be seen again. This was also in the cool fall in which I couldn't believe it sought out a thermal and took off.

Re: Simple Gliders
Agree with you 100% Ken…. They look simple on the surface but getting all the shapes and a few intentional warps right can be challenging ….You bet, I’m going armor that leading edge…. Don’t have any Spruce but have some 1/16 Bass that should take the curve well….. You probably noticed the pod and boom design….. The boom can get pretty thin after shaping and become a point to break….. This one I made in two halves that were grooved internally so I could put a piece of bamboo inside for sort of a spar for strength…..
Yep, To see your Thermic B spec out and fly away is something you and your son will never forget….I’ve had it happen with catapult gliders but not from a HLG….. I’m sure it was a beaut in those colors…. My favorite for visibility…. I snapped a photo of the plan… Kitted by Jetco and I’m sure designed by Zaic….. Certainly his style of drawing…

Re: Simple Gliders
One incredible glider is the Sweepette 19. This one can get lost real easy. Retro R/C sells this as a kit. Campbells Custom Kits made them and he retired. A lot can be learned trimming these.

Re: Simple Gliders
Thanks Ken, Sweepette comes up quite alot when one reads up on HLG’s…. Long history of contest wins, And has been for a lot of years…. T-20 is just a sport glider compared to something like that…. I’ll be happy if I can get one big lazy circle and land close by…. Minimize the chase …. Plus I’m enjoying the woodworking from the old book…
After it got a little hot to work on the wing outside I did a little whittling on the fuse…

Re: Simple Gliders
Looking good ! How did you get that groove cut in there for the inter support ?? I got a plane with a problem at the hinges , i need to cut out some material for the hinge to set in but its very thin 1/8" .

Re: Simple Gliders
Thanks Ken, Very timely too at this point! …... Nice article on building and pre-sets….. Trimming too, It’s own little can of worms…. Will definitely influence how we finish up!
Thanks Eric, Kind of primitive but the groove was done with a couple of small chisels I made a long time ago for some other woodworking projects…. They work fine on balsa as well….Made from square “cut nails”…. Very hard metal and will hold an edge well….One is about 1/8” and the other a little over 1/16”….

Re: Simple Gliders
OK Very good for cutting a long channel what I need would bee 1" by 1" so to make the tools (and those are Nice ) would bee overkill for me ... I am thinking dermal w/rotor bit tool in drill stand holder , locked in maybe can move the wood through it to get close .. Its a old plane and trashed in a few places .. Thanks

Re: Simple Gliders
Doesn’t look like much change but the wing is what takes a lot of work on one of these…
Sanded dead flat on the bottom…. Sanded flat on the top with a taper from
root to tip …. .250” at the root to .080 at the tip…. Checked with a mic and a straight edge along the way to be flat…For prep for next steps….
The shaded portion in the photo is the bottom of the left wing…. Will be sanded away for left tip washout to help with left turn ….. I’ll put a little washout in the right tip but not nearly as much….
![Simple Gliders 20e8fb10](https://i.servimg.com/u/f39/20/31/87/29/20e8fb10.jpg)
I drew a line for the high point for the airfoil at 26%….. So next steps will be: Sand in the washout, Sand leading edge top and bottom…. Sand from high point to trailing edge leaving about
1/16 TE all round…..Thoughts or changes needed?

Re: Simple Gliders
Two different styles contrasting.........
The careful well thought out approach of a craftsman.......
![Simple Gliders Robert22](https://i.servimg.com/u/f43/19/15/28/33/robert22.jpg)
The not so careful, poorly thought out style of a measure it with a stick and cut it with an axe guy........
Hammers instead of common pins![Smile](https://2img.net/i/fa/i/smiles/icon_smile.gif)
![Simple Gliders My_win10](https://i.servimg.com/u/f43/19/15/28/33/my_win10.jpg)
Seriously, I love your picture Robert. A close inspection reveals attention to detail that I wish I still possessed.

Thanks Bob
…… Lots of ways to build a model airplane…. I admire your scratch built replicas…. Without a set of plans!!….
