Cox Engine of The Month
I got a jet
Page 1 of 2 • 1, 2
I got a jet
I had a obsession with jet engines past year
so I got me the cheapest jet I could find (250 dollars)
its a AMT Mercury HP
and all I can say
dont get a 250 dollar jet
and turbines are fricking cool!
when I got her I made a stand and gathered all parts to start her
that does include a simple controller that takes the place of a transmitter
then I did the first test start on propane
it ran!!!!!
but it did not want to switch to the diesel fuel
dead rpm sensor
I contacted AMT Netherlands
and I got me a new sensor
and I got some info on my engine
she was made in 1998 and was sold in America
and in 2000 she got shipped to the AMT America branch for a bearing/axle upgrade
after this she never got send back
well then new sensor on the engine
and she ran
but the bearings sound bad
that is why I only have ran her for demonstrations (10-15 min at the time)
in total 4 liter of fuel
and now she is with AMT for a full check and new bearing
here are a few pictures
and I will upload a small video of the first start

One question?
Where is your fire extinguisher?
I've gone to a "jet" display and I did notice everytime they started the jet engine up, there was somebody nearby with a fire extinguisher (and ready to use it).
Probably for safety reasons with a crowd maybe?
Stay safe

Re: I got a jet
It is good that you finally found what you were looking for and scored, @robot797.
Once engine is fully repaired, do you plan to put it in an aircraft? Perhaps for control line? (just a suggestion).

Re: I got a jet
to be honnest I also expected more smoke
but its a little during startup and a slight haze when running (had a to rich oil mix )
and I dont have any plans for it yet
flying wont be happen
I cant see any depth
but I might put it on a bicycle

On a positive note, you experienced true turbine hands on.robot797 wrote:I have some news and its bad, the engine cant be repaired, lets say its a miracle it ran at all, so now I have to start looking for another jet
What made it non-repairable?

Re: I got a jet
the fuel rails are damages
the bearings are shot
the compressor wheel has bend blades
the axle has damage
the preload spring is weak
the o rings are damaged
and the turbine wheel has damage
the repair costs without the axle and turbine wheel
are 1500
so with the last 2 broken parts its a dead engine
I currently have a budget of 400 to find a replacement

Re: I got a jet
Wow, sounds like you may have picked up an engine from a crashed plane for it to have sustained such damages.robot797 wrote:the fuel rails are damaged, the bearings are shot, the compressor wheel has bend blades, the axle has damage, the preload spring is weak, the o rings are damaged, and the turbine wheel has damage. the repair costs without the axle and turbine wheel are 1500, so with the last 2 broken parts its a dead engine. I have to agree with you.
Sounds like it took a very hard landing.

but that is the chance I took by getting a cheap jet

Re: I got a jet
Can you change it over to a V-1 engine?
Has the look almost like a V-1 engine, except the shorter exhaust pipe. (Just joking ---sorry)
So much damage that nothing can be salvaged?
The one thing I would be afraid of are the bent blades.
One blade goes and that thing is like a bomb!
Just like the full-size jet engines.
Tubine engine blade fail test

the case and burn chamber can be saved
the rest is trash
and I dont dare to make it run with all the defects
so now I am bidding on a few jet joe jets
but I dont think I will get one with my current budget (400 euro)

Re: I got a jet
In most cases, just buying the parts to build one will cost more than purchasing a new jet engine.
That previous seller should not have even tried to sell that jet engine if it was in a crash.
It's not like a 2 stroke or 4 stroke engines where a bent crank or something else simple can be replaced.
Those jet engines are precision engines with tight tolerances.
Sorry you had to pay for someone else's mistake and recoup some of his cost of the engine.

Re: I got a jet
I concur with sosam117. I seriously doubt, short of someone donating a good running engine to you or you find one in an estate sale you attend, that you'll be able to obtain one in good running condition for such a low price.
It is like me trying to buy a good running OS .30 Rotary Wankel engine for under $30 US. Bob bought one for under $100, but it was badly rusted inside, unrestorable to running condition. (Made it a display model.) It too is so finely machined that improperly run on wrong fuels or overheated can easily damage them to non-runners.
I don't mean to be negative, it is just my general assessment being an unattached observer.
With your talents shown by how you did an excellent job in setting up those runs, could see how you could also tweak a Cox Engine to be an extraordinary performer, maybe even a premium Conquest .15. And maybe a plane or land vehicle along with it, that catches everyone's attention.
Thanks for providing us a view of technology we oft don't see here.

Re: I got a jet
OH I know nobody will donate a engine to me (but I wont say no to it)
I am already looking for other 2nd hand engines that have a know running time
and not a description like "it feels smooth when turned by hand"
there will be another jet

Re: I got a jet
Been there done that. About 8 years ago (documented in this forum), bought an Internet auction K&B .20 Sportster R/C Schneurle engine with such a description. When I got It, cylinder was badly scored and chromed piston badly eroded at top, was ruined by either wrong fuel (these require standard Castor oil fuels), overheating or combination of both.robot797 wrote:I am already looking for other 2nd hand engines that have a know running time

Fortunately, a Stunt Hangar forum friend mailed me 2 parts engines for the cost of postage only, which I was able to restore to running condition.
Another, a K&B .35 Stallion non-R/C engine commonly used in C/L stunt planes, looked clean described as a runner, exterior defects described as occlusion defects (air bubbles during hot aluminium poured die casting, 1950's technology).
Upon receipt and further research, discovered seller lied.
https://www.coxengineforum.com/t12115-kb-35-stallion-acquisition
Fortunately I was able to restore the engine into a runner.

Re: I got a jet
I would love to give it a shot and fix the jet
but the mercury has been out of production for almost 10 years
and they are not easy to find parts for

Re: I got a jet
Just come to realise, you've done quite a bit with exotic engines, was looking for a post of mine with a kit I just purchased, found:
https://www.coxengineforum.com/t16815-neckar-jagst-2-fiat-600-rotary
That was an amazing project you did with that rotary engine in a classic Italian commuting vehicle.
