Cox Engine of The Month
Honda 100 - No not the motorcycle

Honda 100 - No not the motorcycle
or the vehicle, or the ATV, or the generator
The battery.
A couple of days ago my bought new in 2007 CR-V would not start. Ok, I haven't started it in a couple of weeks, dead battery. Charged it started it. Ok. Yesterday it was dead again. Ok, really dead battery. Removed it and noticed the date code 1/12. Eleven years and four months. Not bad service. Not a record, I have read 15 years, but I'll accept it.
Replaced it with my bench battery out of my daughters Miata which must be at least seven years old. Exact same size battery. Problem fix for now. But, soon I will be replacing it with another Honda 100. Same battery in my Accord, replaced it a couple of months ago with a Walmart battery. I might get three years out of it. Honda batteries are probably brand engineered, but who ever is supplying them is doing a heck of a job.

Definately a good run for that battery! Do you by chance have a battery charger with a desulfation mode? That may just bring it back yet.

Hi Chancey, No I don't and may be a new one on me. I think I will just let it go to the recycle bin and live on in some other battery.
Sure did last longer that those old D cells that I used to tape together and solder. I remember squeezing the last bit of energy out of those. In my youth I would use the old telephone battery's. They were the best, cylinders about 6 inches tall. New England Bell would come around so often in the 1940's to replace them. Lantern batteries were good too but expensive.

Re: Honda 100 - No not the motorcycle
i agree, battery tech seems to have built in obsolescence nowadays
I've been going to Batteries Plus for a while, trying to buy "new" batteries that will give me more than 3 years
but i have not had any long enough to provide real data
https://www.batteriesplus.com/
i have moved to fancy schmancy batteries in some of the motorcycles, but thats more for weight reduction than longevity
https://shoraipower.com
I notice they also only offer a 3 year warranty. which makes me think? 3 year lifespan
A pal working at Zero Motorcycles tells me battery-tech is the thing for them to succeed, he also says they are about 4 years away from a truly useful battery. their current power packs are just a bunch of lipo pouches in a box filled with epoxy. But they, Tesla, and everyo other electric car maker is trying hard to get a real battery with more than 4 year lifespan
this leads us to the ENORMOUS unspoken problem with electric cars -----
replacing the main battery often costs what the car is worth. Witness the Nissan Leaf, they were almost FREE when they came out. buy the car, get govt rebate, charge at your work? almost free. but the battery dies? and it is not worth replacing and you now have a giant brick in the driveway that is worthless.
SO? good luck with new battery, plan on 3 yr replacement
