Cox Engine of The Month
400ft altitude

400ft altitude
Hi All,
New rules in Canada say I cannot fly over 400ft.
I have rarely flown my S.M.A.L.L planes over that.
3 and 4ft wingspans get hard to see quickly.
My fellow club members with amazing larger projects are all on hold.
We all hope things will get back to a normal.
To keep flying under 400ft,
I think most will gravitate (pun intended) to 4ft and under wingspans.
Your thoughts,
Are appreciated,
With respect,
Dave Fallowfield

P.S. Someone has to cut the grass on the many very nice flying fields/clubs around here....

Re: 400ft altitude
Regarding small, you are correct, Dave. I remember flying my 20-in. (500 mm) Roaring 20. When it got to 50 - 75 ft. altitude or 75 m away, it was harder to see. The 1 m. wingspan, about double that.HalfaDave wrote:New rules in Canada say I cannot fly over 400ft. I have rarely flown my S.M.A.L.L planes over that. 3 and 4ft wingspans get hard to see quickly.

I don't have my hopes up on things returning to normal. I have retained control line returning to it, because they're not (so far, problem is that is depended on local jurisdiction one flies in), considered a "drone".

Re: 400ft altitude
Rules here are the same in Hungary. A few years before the idiotic drone laws were enacted, I had my 32" wingspan Toucan RC plane powered with a TeeDee051 equipped with GPS telemetry sensor, and sent it up to 240m altitude in clear sky...thanks to the TeeDee I could at least sense where it was by its sound, and as I made it drop altitude, I could see it and land it safely..

Re: 400ft altitude
Hi gg,
I am thinking .25cu.in and under might become better.
Cox engines might become 'Cool' again.
90% of the (local)Club members here just like flying their planes, and having fun.
The other 10% were flying, and could not vote...
I like under .25 fixed wing.
All of the clubs I have been to, have been awesome to fly with.
Grounding the +400ft planes is just unfair. And brutal.
Not sure,
How things will go,
Dave
P.S. Under 250g and a wailing Cox.049 is my new 'normal'.

Re: 400ft altitude
I think the .25 upper end in Schneurle (or .35 in older cross scavenge - same power ) is a fair target to shoot for, aircraft under 50" (1270 mm) wingspan. Now that I have my largest Cox, a .15 Sportsman, with such power in a reedie, feel like I am in tall cotton.HalfaDave wrote:I am thinking .25cu.in and under might become better. But if need be, I can always go back to rubber power.
If this happens, flying above 400 ft. won't be a problem.

Re: 400ft altitude
It gives reason to expand the agency (i.e., more staffing) responsible for enforcing it.706jim wrote:400 ft? And just WHO is going to check this?
