Off topic. Help getting chemical analysis?
As the topic says, I’m looking for a way to get a chemical analysis done. When we moved into our new house a few months ago we bought a new Frigidaire refrigerator. When I tried using the water/ice dispenser I found that my lips and tongue would itch and get a dry throat. So I started just using a pitcher. Last week I decided to replace the filter and try again. I didn’t do this earlier as these stupid filters are $50 a piece. No aftermarket items available, so I am at the mercy of Frigidaire. So I ordered it and installed it on Tuesday night. I flushed out four gallons to clear the lines. Wednesday afternoon I tried a glass of ice water. I didn’t notice anything at first, so I filled up a second glass. But then, after I drank most of the second glass the itching started again. When I picked up the glass to pour it out, I noticed a lot of white particulates that had settled on the bottom. Not good. I took the glass with the particulates back to the store I got the fridge from, and they’re sending someone out on Tuewday to look at it, but I don’t want to depend on them. So…
It’s been three days and my tongue and lips still itch, so I want to send a sample out to be analyzed so I know what I’ve been ingesting. I tried Home Depot and Lowe’s, but neither have any kind of sampling kit I can send off. I’m not sure where to go from here, so I’m asking advice here and on a couple of other forums I frequent. Anyone have any suggestions?

You might ask the local utility company or whoever supplies your water. They may have on-site analysis available or be able to provide a contact where they get their analysis done.

Mark, you could do your own testing wit a pH kit for aquarium or swimming pool. It would at least tell you what the pH level is.
An alternative is to buy bottled water meanwhile for drinking and cooking, may be a water stand and use 25 gallon jugs. I installed one of those $30 Pur water filter systems on the sink faucet, you can get 3 filters for $40, each lasts 2 or 3 months and has a replace filter light, certainly cheaper than the refrigerator filter. I got the system that does a better filtration than their basic system.
How is the bath water? May be use a lawn sprinkler to water and flush out the lines?

Hi, All. Still here. Got a lab to send the samples to, but it'll take a few days to get any results. The store I bought the fridge from said their service tech would be here today to look t the fridge. Supposed to be here between 11AM an 5PM. It's now 2:30 and no word yet.
I have a Britta filter pitcher that we've been using for months, and between that and Costco water bottles I'm keeping hydrated. Just very irritating. Thanks for all your concern. This forum is great for fellowship.

Re: Off topic. Help getting chemical analysis?
Glad to here you are alive and well, Mark.
My wife loved her Brita pitcher until I installed a Pur filter on the kitchen sink faucet. It has a better quality filter. Filters out more impurities and poisons than the Brita. Plus, gives an LED signal when time to change filter cartridges. Price gone up, 2 years later now $45 for 3 cartridges (about a 6 month supply) from Wally Mart but came with $5 off coupon.

I had the PUR filter on the faucet of our apartment before we moved in to this house. My wife hated it. And the sink in the new house has that fancy faucet that also pulls out to use as a veggie sprayer. So we have to stick with the pitcher for now.

Re: Off topic. Help getting chemical analysis?
When we were on a well, we used a ceramic filter that could be cleaned with a scotchbrite pad. It worked well and took care of e coli and stuff. Just took a while to fill up a container. Back to city water now.. we used the Brita for years, and the reverse osmosis. They all would smell funny and cost lots. Now we just put water in a gallon of so container, and leave it out on the counter or in the fridge for a few hours to let the chlorine smell evaporate away. We do have pretty good water here though. I think filters are over rated. Maybe the water is somewhat cleaner, but then we put coffee beans and tea leaves and flour and whatever else in, so what's the use IMHO?

Re: Off topic. Help getting chemical analysis?
I don't know about Canada, but US has not updated water standards, now outdated, IMO. In rural farming areas we seem to have higher incidences of cancers; with pesticides, fertilizer and various other residues from raising crops and livestock finding their way into the water supply.
Some locales, water infrastructure is in poor condition, allowing impurities to enter in.
Some areas, politicians are more interested in their projects versus what is best for all people. Privately owned utilities, management may be more interested in benefiting their stockholders than what is best for their customers. So, these are legitimate concerns.

Well, and update. The service tech came and looked at the fridge. First he filled a glass of water and looked at it and there were no particulates. Then he filled a glass with ice and put it in the microwave to melt it. He said, "Hmmm. It is a little cloudy." I then pointed to the particles in the bottom of the glass. He said, "Yeah, I see that. I've never seen this before. I'll have to talk to my boss tomorrow morning." I told him when he did, the only recommendation I would go with is that he recommend the dealer replace the fridge.

.................
Several years back, I noticed that the water in the toilet had a decidedly pinkish tinge. I ran the water in the sink, then filled a glass -- the same pink color. I called the local municipal utility company to ask about the water supply and was told, "We don't know what it is, but it's safe to drink."
Yeah, right. Can you imagine being told, "Go ahead and drink it -- we'll let you know what we find out."
I later found out that it was potassium permanganate that the utility introduced to control iron concentration and some organics that affect water taste and odor -- the metering valve had malfunctioned and dumped too much into the system.

Take the dealer a quart of water and tell him to drink it if he thinks it isn't contaminated. See how he likes it!
