Yes, Bob, this is a rare example of exhaust throttle on a plastic COX CL airplane. I think it takes special skills not just to activate it from the control handle, but to smoothly land with an idled engine in exactly the semi circle section where the plane has headwind.

Reading the brief hint of text in the instructions, am I reading correctly? To move throttle to low speed or idle position, one gave full down elevator. Then I guess one blips U-control to full up temporarily to toggle full throttle?
Perhaps in this case, the factory idle setting was not full idle, but lower speed? These half-A's don't glide as good as say a .35 powered airplane does. I know if flying my half-A balsa creations, that as soon as the engine quit, if I had any elevation, say 5 feet above ground, the plane, say one of my Sterling Beginner profiles would just sort of fall out of the sky. I had less than a quarter circle if that.
But that then was the difference from a very lightweight balsa model to a heavier plastic one, I guess. (All successful flight experiences were with balsa models, my early attempts at flight with the plastic RTF ones were dismal at best.)
If I sound academic it is because it has been a long time since I lived where I could fly half-A CL. (Too much wind in desert like eastern NM. We may be have calm wind 4 out of 52 weekends a year.)

Very nice example Bob…. I can tell it’s later in Cox history by the other model examples on the box…. I’m curious too how the throttle works… Is there some kind of stop that holds it at hi or lo or does the throttle ring just float?

I guess it is activated against a spring fixed to the crankcase, that recoils when the line controling it is released ?

That is a Nice one !! From the data base any were from 1967- 1996 If it has the 190-6 engine i am guessing its 1974-1976 Product Engine .049 (0.8 cm³)
Manufactured between 9/1974 and 2/1975 (#190-6, ECJ #19)
Engines like this were used in a large number of control line models. Often small modifications like the exhaust ”flip-of-your-wrist“ throttle were used to adapt the engine to the model. The black oxide steel spring keeps the throttle in its position as long as the pilot does not change gear. This particular model was used in a nice Combat Mustang P-51D.

Yeah, it's killing me two ways. I ain't tearing this NIB example apart just to find out. And, two I ain't flyin' it either! But, I would imagine that it's some sort of spring loaded system with a rod off the bell crank that locks it in either the full or idle positions (Preset at the factory) based on how the control handle is actuated.
I wish it was a clapped out example that I could fly and investigate because this one is just going boxed and untouched onto the "wall of shame."
But I have three other examples. (I have a personal connection to the aircraft having been in VA-35 (Attack Squadron 35) flying it in the mid 1950's.)
