Happy Birthday to me!

Happy Birthday to me!
The last time I announced my birthday was five years ago when I turned 80. Now five years later................perhaps a tad more gray and a pound or two added but my enthusiam for model airplanes has never wained although my ability for constructing them might have.
Soooooo, although I haven't officially turned 85 yet, the kids showed up this past weekend bearing food and gifts.
I had mentioned to Mark that if in his travels he came across a vintage RCA 45 rpm record player I would like one to replace one I had years ago. Add a NIB Rivarossi locomotive set and a NIB Cox C/L Piper Cub and I'm a happy camper.
Made in China, SureStart, Colorado.. They are out there but this is the first one that I have ever noticed. A couple on ebay right now, not too expensive.

Bob @rsv1cox!
I didn't know that Estes actually made a new Cub primary trainer with Sure Start. I knew they made some neat Star Wars and futuristic fighter plane and Apache helicopter RTF's, but not the Cub.

Happy birthday Bob. I like the train set, ideal for a switching layout in a limited space. I had a look in the Rivarossi catalogs and this set was new in the 1959 catalog but disappeared already for 1961.

Thanks Lieven, I haven't had a chance to research it yet but that is a rather short production run. The locomotive does have an alloy problem, the cast cylinders are crumbling and I have had to CA them back on. I forget what they called the alloy mix, but it's famous for not aging well. Zemax or something like that.
I do have a Rivarossi (B&O) direct replacement with plastic cylinders that runs fine, you can see the cracking in the cylinder.
Rivarossi Krauss Maffi Reo Grande moving out in the background.
Most of my stuff is Rivarossi but these are early Varney coil spring belt drives. I rebuilt 90% of them and repainted the Pennsylvania's and most of the grays. 40's and 50's.
All Rivarossi/Pocher except for a couple of Tyco's.
My, I do go off the rails at times.......
Thanks TL. I alway enjoy reading about your filghts.

Bob, it is what it is, but you did a nice job on preserving it historically. Used to be many things that were made in US, considered to be of the highest quality worldwide, that are now made elsewhere.rsv1cox wrote:But it's about that Cox Cub. China, Penrose Co.. But, our internal model aircraft internal combustion engines are slowly (or rapidly, depending on your point of view) becoming obsolete. So, at least we have a glimpse of what the last Piper Cub C/L RTF looked like.
I thought it a bit odd that they departed from true scale appearance, by making it narrower than the earlier ones. I still think your Sterling Beginners Series Profile Piper Cub in balsa is still classic. When it flew originally, must have been quite a sight for the tenderfoot at the controls.

Re: Happy Birthday to me!
Well a huge Happy Birthday to you Bob. You have provided us all with a great deal of entertainments and useful information for years and I for one really appreciate your contribution. I know there have been times when you've wondered if anyone is taking interest in your posts, but I assure you, we are.
Personally, I'm looking at the "Big 60" in a couple of weeks and I can guarantee you that neither of my sons will turn up with some nice reminder of things past like you've received. In fact, there's probably more of a chance that my beloved will decide that one of my treasures is taking up space and has to go. I guess my tardiness in completing projects and storing stuff away safely contributes to the problem. My "one day" may never come if I don't find a bit of motivation. Then there's the "dicky ticker" that I've been dealing with since my last Covid vax. Currently doing Cardiac Rehab (with all the old guys recovering from heart attacks and surgery etc) even though the "experts" still say they don't know what's wrong with me. I must say, the rehab staff are quick to pull me off a machine if I show signs of distress. Two minutes on a treadmill or exercise bike and I start to fade fast. Chest goes tight and can't catch my breath. Maybe I won't need to worry about my "stuff" for much longer if this goes on. It'll become someone elses problem.
Ya gotta laugh!

A very happy birthday to you, Bob -- you've got a few years on me, but who's counting. Hopefully, we've both got a few more restorations left in us. I'm looking forward to a lot more of yours -- an incentive plan, so to speak. Best of wishes.

Yeah, some times I read my posts and think - You gotta be the most boring guy on the forum.
and....
Maybe I won't need to worry about my "stuff" for much longer if this goes on. It'll become someone elses problem.
I remember when I was 22 and undergoing a Navy re-enlistment physical and the doctors found a heart murmur and I thought OMG I'm going to die. That was 63 years ago Rod. Eat right, live right and don't sweat the small stuff.
When I lost my wife the light went out of my life. A beautiful woman right to the end, she never lost any of her youthful physical appearance. I greave for her every day, but if I ever gave up she would return and kick my butt right into next week. This hobby and this forum helps me cope.

I found one of my old posts on the Model Train Forum. Varney called it Zamax a mix of tin and zinc. After years of exposure it made a terrible mess known as metal rot.
