Re: Bad Weather
Well I wouldn't run one on gasoline either. But apparently they will work just fine. As long as you don't relight one while they are hot and the fuel vaporizes.
While I've never tried it myself, I've read that you can extinguish a lit cigarette in an open bucket of gasoline when the temperature is in the 40's or less.

X2 on NO gasoline Jim.
TL do you use store bought kerosene? Walmart sells it for about $20 per gallon. I have always used pump kerosene, about $3.50 a gallon around here. I would think the expensive stuff would burn cleaner and be easier on the kerosun.

Re: Bad Weather
There were many Kerosun heaters sold in my town (Thunder Bay Canada) about 40 years ago, but IMO for the wrong reasons. It's true they will heat a room nicely but should have an open window to vent the fumes. Sort of defeats the purpose of a heater.
But the real reason they should have never been purchased (and most sit idle or abandoned) is that it is cheaper and safer just just plug in an electric space heater. No fuel, carbon or wicks to worry about and a lot cheaper to operate.
If there were a total power failure, that is when they would make sense probably in a rural setting.

Re: Bad Weather
One of the reasons I abandoned my Moonlighter was the availability of kerosene. The dealer stopped selling it and pump kerosene is not common in this region. As I mentioned this style of heater has its place but most were mistakenly bought as a cheap source of heat which they are not.

For several years I used pump kerosene from a local gas station. I had to stop using that supplier as the quality of their kero deteriorated badly I think they were cutting it with diesel fuel. I bought it from the local Menards (building supply store) for a while, at about $8.00 a gallon. That stuff does burn clean and the wicks lasted well.
This year, I found another source for pump kero at $4.00 gallon.
706jim, kerosene is getting expensive and hard to get. Too bad as I like it as a heat source. In the '70s, diesel and kero were cheap. Not any more.

Re: Bad Weather
I agree 706jim. there were also a bunch of those heaters here as well in Winnipeg. My dad had his and his fathers. I remember back years ago dad and I working in the unheated garage running one of those things in the winter. But recently he had sold them due to the cost of Kero, and me having a couple of the Mr.Buddy heaters, and 2 other Mr.Heater forced air heaters. 3 of them are propane, and one is diesel. The first two are ok to use inside as there are low oxygen cut-offs. But I have never needed them other than in my ice shack.
And to top this up, this morning was -51 F with the windchill this morning and close to -40 throughout the day. However, they are saying it will be +34 F tomorrow...... Can't wait to see it to believe it.

Re: Bad Weather
Mother nature was at it yet again this morning. South winds 30 -40 mph blowing snow all around with yet again zero visibility to drive in. Maybe 20 feet of visibility and could only go 15 - 20 mph most of the way to work. Worse driving conditions than last week. But I'm here and hopefully it will again let up a bit for the drive home.

Wow! So today we got to 28 Fahrenheit with the windchill, and tomorrow morning it will again be around -40 Fahrenheit with the windchill. What a yo-yo weather system we are in this year!

Re: Bad Weather
We're into our sixth or seventh day in a row @ over 30ºC. Got up to 36 yesterday before thunderstorms came through. Woke up to more thunder this morning followed by about an hour of tropical type rain. Currently back over 30ºC after it hit 100% humidity at 9.30 this morning. Back down to around 70% now. Still way too sticky for my liking.

Re: Bad Weather
More snow today, predicting 2".
Got out this morning with the tractor and put more logs and brush on the cave that I dug into the dirt pile and set them off. Smoldering, and I would love to get back out there and pile some more on while it's still burning. My head says Yes but my back says No. Head usually wins out but not this time, to late in the day.
Really, for the first time I'm making a dent in the big burn pile.
Remember this:
Accounts for about a quarter of the burn pile, rest is about ten pine trees that the Pine Bark Borer ate up.

Snow prediction was 5-12" here. Storm is supposed to subside today Saturday by afternoon sometime. We already have 5" at 5 am and it's really coming down.

Re: Bad Weather
Here in New England (Northern Rhode Island) there had been a blizzard warning. Snow started falling on Friday night (1/28) around 10pm. It would snow steadily through 6pm on Saturday. Temps were in the mid teens (Fahrenheit). Accumulation of approx. 18-20 inches. Today sunny and cold (mid-teens again..) The clean-up would begin at noon and finished by 3pm.

Your right Eric, those cuts look like they were made with a surgeon's knife. Some kind of a snow blower I would think.
Actually, broke above 32 degrees today. Got Mark over to do some chain sawing while I moved the cut-offs to the burn pile.

You guys kill me... yes.. the job was done by the new (last year..) Ariens "Classic 24" available US Lowes Home Centers Winter 2020/2021.
2nd season found hard-start conditions. Possible stale fuel.. but probable under the circumstances. I found it necessary to utilize the electric-starter option.. which did indeed.. bring joy.
Re: Bad Weather
Never thought I would have to do this again.... Another Alberta clipper with snow and blizzard like conditions. Zero visibility and highways were plugged good this time. As usual after arriving again they loved all my highways, and even many more this time, not even my backroads can I get to. Hopefully this will clear up. Hope everyone else is staying warm and safe today!

We're through our little spell of heat and humidity. I actually almost had to put a jumper (sweater) on tonight. Back to low to mid 20s with far more comfortable humidity levels. I might even get some painting done this week.
I still don't know how you folk survive in the cold and the snow like you do.

Yea Chance.. you've been hit pretty hard man. We folks is still "workin' for the man".. which means a commute for many of us.
Later this week (Friday? ) will my given forecast be accurate? There will be precipitation... Northwestern regions (New England) should see snow.. but air-temps "easterly" are above freezing.. so there is the potential for "sleet".. which can make it treacherous to drive anywhere.. *UPDATE 2/3/22* temps will drop sub-freezing by Saturday morning.. and I've been asked to work X-tra hours this Sat. morning. We're very busy where I work.. and I like that. I won't attempt to drive on icy roadways though. I'll test the local "main roads" for traction.. and will then make the final decision whether to drive the 12.3 mi. to the mill. It's forecast to be be clear and COLD.. with the emphasis on cold. All that is wet; will freeze.. unless it's treated. Sometimes you just need to have faith in the municipalities.. that they will treat and monitor the roadways for safety.
I feel very fortunate. I've been reasonably healthy throughout all of this.. only missed a few days of work while my employer secured a "necessary-business" order to proceed to operate. I was then asked if I'd like to work on a skeleton production-crew.. while observing all safety guidelines set-forth by the CDC. Naturally; I agreed.
As of this post; there's some extreme weather happening in N. America. I only naturally pay attention to the weather in my area for a given season.. but I have to wonder whether the other areas of this world which experience a distinct 4-season climate, have seen the extreme weather-patterns that we have here.
Hey Chancy, Stay safe brother.
