Thanks for sharing this. I knew about the OK Cub 049A and 059 reed valve, but not the Foxes nor Darts.

This statement caught my attention - I have a few DC Darts.

The DC Dart 0.5cc diesel is a beam mount engine and shares nothing in common with a Cox Bee. However, the DC Wasp had an optionial back plate and tank mounting assembly. The Bee is the Wasp with the mounting lugs shaved off.

The Dart (0.5cc diesel) crankcase was originally reused for the DC Bantam (0.8cc, .049 glow) but the crankcase was beefed up for the Wasp and the Bee and externally much larger.

However, the comment made me wonder if the radial mount fitted the Dart - the mount holes do match the Cox Bee (something I didn't know!).

Alas, no chance -





The threads are not the same and, even if they were, the depth of the tank back plate would foul the crankshaft.

So I am afraid that the statement is incorrect with regard to the DC Dart but omits the DC Wasp and the DC Bee.

We live and learn - obviously this was Davis-Charlton's attempt to replace the Cox Bee.

I have never seen a mention or an advert for a radial tank for the Dart but now I have a project to make a Wasp mount fit!

Ian, having plowed through over 300 Foxes made during a period spanning 67 years, I'm no stranger to anomalies.  I do wish I could tell you more about my Dart tank.  I got the engine in its box at a local swap meet in 2011.  It was complete with all papers, the cylindrical tank, and this tank.  I would think you would have seen a tank like this in the UK, maybe by Keilkraft.  My engine was sold by a dealer in the USA.  I doubt any US manufacturer would have made an accessory tank for a British diesel.  So we have a mystery!

The idea of a Cox pattern would have been a sound decision.  Hundreds of planes were designed for a Cox engine and being able to use your engine in them would have been an attractive option.

I guess one could have turned down and threaded the front end of a Wasp tank, but I don't seeing this being done in the US.

The Allbon Bambi is a superb little engine. I have a couple of these but no box.

I also have a couple of Russian "clones" - which, I am loathe to say, are much better performers.



The original Bambis are extremely collectable but delicate. I have repaired a few of them - damage nearly always caused by flooding that diesels are susceptible to.

I have not yet seen an Allbon original - only DC versions.

I also like the Allbon Dart.



The smallest production diesel engine in the world was outdone by Allen Engineering with the AE 0.1cc.

I take your point about the radial mount on the Dart and I forwarded the details you posted to a DC collector who has all the DC and Allbon engines and variants ever produced together with adverts, leaflets and paper work (and some prototypes!). You have an engine setup he hasn't got! I expect I will be making one soon!
