Re: fuel for norvel .061
Ran about 3 quarts+ thru my new Big Mig 074 RC and it still has a good tdc pinch. By just the way it feels and dealing with tight TDC motors in the past,, it's probably going to take several gallons before it starts to loosen at all, if any. I don't really want it to loose that tight pinch, but eventually it is inevitable and unavoidable. With any new motor, with a tight TDC or not, they always get a preheat. 90% of the time it makes starting them so much easier and they will last longer. I have done this for years and will continue to do so. The quicker you can get them to operating temp during running, the longer they will last. Very important to after-run those tight new motors when they are still warm. As soon as the motor runs out of fuel during a break in run, rotate that piston to BDC.

Re: fuel for norvel .061
im looking at it right now, turns out that its actually an ame engine, and it says 0.8 for displacement in stead of 0.61.
is this engine rare?

Re: fuel for norvel .061
No, it is a fairly common older model.
The 0.8 stands for .8cc displacement or .049 equivalent. You can't tell whether a NORVEL is a Big Mig or AME unless you count the intake ports in the cylinder -- both are outwardly alike. The AME has 3 larger oblong ports and the Big Mig has 5 smaller circular ports. If you're using the lettering on the side of the case as an indicator that it's an AME, what you're seeing is likely AMД, which are the first letters of Авиация Модель двигателя or Russian for aviation model engine. The early models had this embossed on the case, regardless of engine type. When the engine was "Americanized", the English term Aviation Model Engine was retained and shortened to AME to differentiate it from the later model Big Mig.

Re: fuel for norvel .061
Is the Mig part of the name related to the MiG Russian Aircraft corporation?

Rusty --
I've done a bit of poking around in NORVEL history over the years and do not recall ever learning why the Big Mig name was selected. I don't think it has anything to do with the MiG factory (named for the founders Artem Mikoyan and Mikhail Gurevich)

Just recieved my Norvel Mitch.
A bit rough, but it will live again. serial#6100027, which denotes to .061 I believe. Dont know what the #27 means. #27 made?. Missing the cylinder screws.

Cant tell, some black pen mark there, but it's smeared beyond recognition. It kinda looks like a 1.0

Re: fuel for norvel .061
Well, it's early on in the series, early enough that they were still using cubic centimeters for displacement, so the 61 in the serial probably means something else.
Likely, it will be either marked with a 0.8 or 1.0 cc (.049 or .061). There are several indicators that place this engine early in the evolution. The muffler stinger points straight back; the NV looks to be brass or brass colored; the carb is glued in and the intake screen retainer is turned and pressed on to the carb body. Just as a guess, the thrust plate probably slips over a tapered split collet rather than having a flat broached into it.
The cylinder screws are 2mm in diameter. The OEM screws used on all NORVEL versions are around 5mm in length. When in place, they do not extend through the crankcase flange. Anytime I pull any maintenance on one of my engines, I replace the cylinder screws with socket head screws that are 8mm in length. At this length, the screw protrudes below the flange so if it ever gets snapped off flush with the top of the crankcase, I can back it out from the bottom using needle nose pliers. If it doesn't protrude and gets broken, it can be a real pain to get out of the flange hole.
Since your engine is an early model, the plug may be one of the original plug designs, fairly cold and requiring more voltage than the later Freedom plugs. If that's the case, the newer Freedom plug will not fit the existing head clamp. If you have one of Bernie's or Matt's new plug inserts, try it for size. If it will work with the head clamp on your engine, it will work with NORVELs current production plug.

Re: fuel for norvel .061
Good call on the glow plug, it does look like the colder version (flat top on the electrode). The later warmer ones have a round ball at the end.
The last time I bought plugs from NV I got the old type though...

Excellent,,good info.
I have some cap head grade 10 M2x8's, 6's and 5's.
split collet drive on the nose, brass main needle, all the rest.
