Did they sell them in the 80's?

Yes first introduced in 1986!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cox_model_engine
1989 Texaco (Cat#4506 - Manufactured 1989-1996)
The is engine was designed for 1/2A Texaco RC duration competition. The engine has an additional fin on the larger glow plug which dissipates heat better allowing the engine to swing a larger propeller. i.e. 7 or 8 inches. This engine has a red 8cc fuel tank and a black crankcase. Original 1989 engines did not come out with 5 fin glow plug. The 5 fin glow plug came later in the 1992 Catalog.

That has a 3 fin head!

I hate to do this cos it kinda stands 'conventional wisdom' on it's head but...
I have in my hand a Cox brochure from 1992 which shows a Texaco with a 3 fin head on it.......!
But unlike the above it has a silver prop driver.
Sad

I was reading somewhere that the 5 fin came out in 1992, before that it was a 3 fin, so this could be correct. Not the only pic I've seen with a brass drive plate either. I think engines where built with what ever parts where on hand sometimes. My 049 has a brass drive plate and it came on a white PT-19. Randy has a slightly newer PT19 hanging in his basement that also has a brass drive plate.

I'm not sure Travis mine is around that time I think, it has a 5 fin, almost pink tank and black back plate which I think
(the back plate) dates to early 90's. But who know's, only one things sure and that is there's a danger in accepting info on certain websites as 'Gospel'.
On a slightly different slant I read yesterday that the 68 TD was THE Engine to have as it was somehow better than the rest or so the Pylon boys thought in the Mid 70's ever heard that one?
Cool
