We had an Edsel Villager wagon when I was a kid. Tourquise and white. Went camping in it with a cartop tent mounted that folded out,...with a ladder!

I'm sure that was fun! As kids; we didn't see (scrutinize..) automobile styling as adults did. Incidentally.. the "Villager" wagon model-name would continue-on under the Mercury division of FOMOCO. My late ex-wife and I had a 1992 Mercury Villager (1st model-year) which was marketed in the minivan class. It was a re-badged Nissan "Quest" actually. It was our 2nd minivan. Our first was a 1987 Ford Aerostar. We needed a minivan when we discovered that we were expecting Triplets (born 5/31/88)... and already had a daughter born 5/22/87.
Automobiles aren't what they used to be.. but they're a lot safer. That's really important these days.. with the "distracted driving" problem. Technology caused that issue.. and now; technology has to deal with it.
Re: Bling in steel and leather
My boss "Ken" is a great guy and real great boss. He's a "car guy".. and has a tee-shirt from the 150+mph NASCAR Experience.. (did I get that right?) Ken's been in the market for an automobile that's a cut-above. He was eyeing a Maserati.. (but soon came to his senses..) Not that there's anything wrong with Maserati's.. but.. cripes.
Well.. last week he found and made a deal on a 2016? Mercedes AWD 3 series C-class black on black NICE 60Kmi./1-woman-owned vehicle. Not an AMG Robert.. but a real nice ride.
Well.. less than 48hrs. after taking ownership.. he and his wife get rear-ended while stopped to make a LH turn. It was a collision that "totalled" the car that hit them. The estimated speed was in excess of 40mph. The accident-photos of the Mercedes showed its rear bumper-cover distorted.. but taillight lenses intact. The other vehicle was a late-model/mid-size sedan (Chevy Impala?) was obviously totaled; smashed well back to its a-pillars. Ken said that the impact sounded like an "M-80". The Mercedes' head-rests instantly deployed.. (anti-whiplash protection). The Chevy's Driver's forward airbag never deployed...

That's some luck like i would have , Those are some pretty wild looking cars from days gone by ! And that cartop tent thing i had to look up ( I don't get it ?) Now getting back to that statement >> We needed a minivan when we discovered that we were expecting Triplets (born 5/31/88)... and already had a daughter born 5/22/87.<<>> At this stage in life would need >> Sorry Buddy couldn't resist

When I was 14 we took a trip from our home in New Hampshire to Los Angeles 3000 miles as the crow flies but we went through Canada, Wyoming, and points North going out. Came back the southern route. No interstates, 2 lane roads.
Dad rigged up this tent affair that rolled out complete with mosquito netting. I think we only used it a couple of times. I hate to think the mileage and time it cost us due to the drag of the thing.
Rather that roll it out Dad just took a nap where he could find it.

The 1955 Saab 92B had an accessory set that allowed the interior to be converted to a double bed. The front seat cushions could be removed without tools, and the accessory set included wooden pieces that, placed under the cushions on the floor, made the ”bed” reasonably level.
Quite comfy it seems Not sure where to keep all the other stuff, on the roof rack maybe?

Yeah, looks like she might just strangle Elmer for bringing her over to the beautiful beach and then passing out on Skåne Akvavit

Ya...the tent affair on the roof of the Edsel doubled as a car top carrier for all the baggage when it wasn 't deployed as a tent! Dad rigged up a pulley system from the garage ceiling to hoist it off and store it when not in use. I remember the push button shifting went out in the middle of the Badlands of North Dakota....in the middle of a fierce storm!.....aah..the good old days!

A friend bought one of the first Edsels off the line, beautiful thing, tri colored with a fantastic interior including that push button transmission in the steering wheel. I was envious. Shortly thereafter the troubles began. Later years they solved most of the problems but they rushed it to production and suffered the consequences.
