World war 1 ends today

World war 1 ends today
Today, we celebrate the end of the first world war. The armistice was signed in a railcar near Compiègne and the war ended on 11 Novembre 1918 at 11.00 am. Last year I did some hiking at Pozières in the Somme region. In and around the village, Australian and New Zealand forces suffered severe losses during battle in 1916. Pozières was totally destroyed.
Many monuments can now be visited in the area. In Pozières, there is a big Commonwealth cimetary
and a war memorial for the lost animals that served
Some memorials are in the middle of the fields
In Thiepval, a giant monument is engraved with more than 72.000 names of missing soldiers, their bodies were never found.
During a hiking trip, we took a field road and walked next to a freshly laboured field. On the side of the road, the bombs that were dug up wait to be picked up by the demining service. This is happening daily and not only here but also in Belgium near Ypres.

WW1, the "War to end all war's. Didn't happen.
Wonderful pictures Lieven. Not surprising that they are still digging up explosives considering the tonnage they used in both wars. Scary.
I love horses, and thanks for including the pictures of the Australian Memorial. I watch AHC (The American Hero's Channel), PBS, Discovery and others. Scenes of both wars invariably contain pictures of dead horses still attached to wagons, breaks my heart to see these magnificent obedient animals slaughtered.
Event (England) documented in Spielberg's movie War Horse.

The seven week battle claimed 23,000 Australians. A pretty severe blow to a young nation of less than five million, considering that a similar number were lost at Gallipoli also.

The ones with the fuse are not the dangerous ones. They are shrapnell shells. Ideally, a shrapnell shell should explode 6 metres above the ground.
According to the readings with the gonio, the timer ring is set at a certain amount of seconds. Not always reliable. I got one at home:
