Gentle Ben

Gentle Ben
Enjoyed the book and TV series of long ago.
Not so much this Gentle Ben as I have named him, mostly because he doesn't destroy the bird feeders like all the others. He just knocks the roof off and eats the seeds. But this is getting old, four times in the last seven days. I get sick of putting it back up.
You can see the path he took in the wet grass out of the woods. Left by the walkway over the driveway to the neighbors.

Well Gives you something to do LOL Naw why not put something in the feeder that the Bear will not like , say lemons , onion, Hot pepper mix >> I know the birds want like it but to try and get the bear to not enjoy and maybe stop coming to visit or at least as much

Re: Gentle Ben
Thanks Eric, maybe - but bears will eat most anything.
That's funny Levent, hanging on by a claw he goes back for seconds and thirds. Bears are excellent climbers. In the TV series they used several different bears that were declawed and had most of their teeth removed. Cruel in my opinion, wild animals should be left in the wild.

Is that Eddie Munster in the Gentle Ben photo? I never knew he was in anything but the Munsters...or was it the Addams Family? The only one I could keep straight is Elvira!

With the fall coming, I am wondering if your dinner guest will visit more frequently before going for a little sleep?

He's Clint Howard, Ron Howards brother.
Clinton Engle Howard (born April 20, 1959) is an American character actor and comedian. He is the younger brother of actor and director Ron Howard. He had roles in the films The Waterboy and Apollo 13, as well as on TV shows, playing characters such as Mark Wedloe on Gentle Ben, Stanley on The Baileys of Balboa (1964-1965), Steve on The Cowboys (1974), and as Creepy Rodney on My Name Is Earl (2006-2008). He has appeared in many films directed by his brother, Ron, as well as many low-budget cult films

Ambien - That's it, a few tablets among the seeds.

Re: Gentle Ben
Yellowstone or is it Jellystone Park? Rules: Don’t feed the Bears! If you can forgo feeding the Birds long enough to break the feeding habits of your neighborhood bear. If there is no food available he will stop coming around. Or he’ll try in get in your kitchen for food if ya don’t leave any outside! There’s a few YouTube videos of bears breaking into cars/vans parked at campgrounds just to get food. They can be very destructive.
Do you have a fireplace that needs a bearskin rug in front of it?
Here are a list of bear deterrents: http://www.bearsmart.com/live/bear-deterrents/

Re: Gentle Ben
If it's the same one that turned tail and ran when I opened the door to take a picture, he's more chicken than bear.
I have thought about removing the feeder for a few weeks, but I have had a bear problem ever since we moved in here. I think he or another bear would show up again. I could post pictures of at least 10 different bird feeders that they have destroyed over the years.
Watched The Andy Griffith show last night just to avoid politics and Opie was up to mischief again. Coincidentally his baby brother Clint appeared too in an uncredited role. Ron Howard cast him in many of his movies later in life.

I watched Gentle Ben series in Turkish TV in 1974 -75. I remember it's intro. It's name was Bear and I in those black & white TV years.

Re: Gentle Ben
Great intro Levent.
Dennis Weaver, played on Gun Smoke with James Arness. Chester I believe.
Again last night. Every other night now. He must be denned up in the Ridge just to the West of me. Not so Gentle now, smashed one of the bird feeders uprights. No matter it still holds seed. Dug out the hole and put it back up. I don't know who will give up first, him or me.
Not the only visitor, had this Vixen in the back yard last week. Beneficial visitor, she eats the tiny sightless moles picking them out of the ground.

Re: Gentle Ben
With all these beautiful creatures showing up, have you possibly considered starting a 'wild zoo'? Wow, you sure have quite a nice little variety at your place. But, unfortunately a couple ones that are a bit destructive...

I'm thinking so Chancey. I know he's denning up on the rocky ridge less than half a mile from my house.
After storing the bird feeder in the garage for over two weeks I was hoping that the bear would leave me off his shopping list and forget about his visits. Not so. Lasted two nights before he was back. No rhyme or reason, he's dropped the feeder at all points of the compass.
Debating whether or not to put it back up.
