April 22nd 1970 Naval Schools Command Newport Rhode Island I along with about ten other NCO's were assigned groups of Sailors and ordered to clean the Bases rocky coast line of litter and debris.

In charge of a dozen grumpy, sleepy, and unmotivated E 2's, 3's and 4's at 7am on a cold windy day was a challenge and it took more than a little verbal encouragement to get them started. Leading by example, I headed for the most inaccessible part of our assigned area covered by dense foliage. Took about two hours to complete the job in our assigned area when I dismissed them.

Next day I was covered by poison ivy rash. Such was my introduction to "Earth Day."

Thanks for cleaning up Bob. The good thing about military is motivated or not orders are orders! I know the “rash” all too well. I went looking for snakes with my son a week ago. Somehow even though I was aware of my surroundings I still managed to get ivy on me. My son is still immune to the stuff.

I had that rash couple of times when trying to find lost RC planes in the dense bush of weeds and ivy surrounding the field where i fly..I read somewhere that ivy poison is otherwise good to treat high blood pressure?????

I think it gives me high blood pressure, keeping me awake scratching all night!

50 years later, my current Earth Day.

Pulling stumps - ATV + chain

And dealing with windy days and falling trees

No poison ivy though.

Todays "Earth Day" doesn't seem to get as much notice as it once did. I remember when the concept was initiated. World-wide the tree huggers and environmentalists had a "field" day. Everyone was involved. Now - not so much. Kind of sad, but these are troubling times.

Grew up on a farm and fortunately was never bothered by poison Ivy, or poison Oak. Unfortunately, the Chiggers and Ticks were a constant irritation.

My poor Mother on the other hand would breakout all over after washing my clothes! She was highly allergic to the stuff that we played in all day with no ill effect.

Amazing though reporting on earth day, all three broadcast networks tonight showed scenes of animals taking over vacated Public and National Parks due to the lack of human involvement.  Also scenes of clearing sky's in polluted major cities throughout the world because people are no longer driving. The before and after's were quite dramatic.
