Yes, yhe small yellow cable stay with the plane in flight. Latole
But you may be on to something George. Do you have a picture or illustration of your stooge setup?
It should be so simple but it has to be secure. Any trip freeing the plane before the pilot is ready could be dangerious. The string staying with the plane is the safest but I still think some modification to the plane is possible, safe and the best approach. Tail draggers mods the easiest, tricycle gear a bit more tricky.

Another idea is you could tie a small loop at the end of the string, and tie the other end of the string to the base of your launcher. Then put the end of the string with loop on it on the nail so when you release it, the string loosely pulls around the plane and stays attached to the base.

I generally like balsa too George for the reasons you mention… Watching these guys restore and fly old Cox plastic planes is kinna tempting though

Jacob @Admin 's idea is how my stooge works. I got a photo of it somewhere in this forum with my Ringmaster Junior using it.

For me, Cox aircraft were the first control line aircraft I ever knew.
I then switched to balsa. I haven't flown for a long time .
A few years ago, I got the urge to get back into Coxes and started a collection. I must have about 65 of them, including Testor, Wem and Keil Kraft.
