The adventurous journey of LJ553716520US
The adventurous journey of LJ553716520US
LJ553716520US is a USPS tracked package containing a motorcycle racing engine sump plug.
For the uninitiated, various items on racing vehicles have to be wire tied to prevent them vibrating loose and as the original sump plug was flush fitting, which made drilling it to wire tie somewhat difficult, a plug with a hex head on it was purchased and departed Grand Rapids Michigan on April 3rd 2019 to head for my address in New Zealand.
Those with nothing better to do can use the USPS tracking site for the full unabridged history of LJ553716520US but the short version is LJ553716520US travelled across the US departing from Los Angeles April 11th
arriving in Japan later that day.
After a processing journey through various facilities LJ553716520US departed Japan on or shortly after April 15th
and arrived back in the US in San Francisco on April 19th.
There after further processing it departed the US on April 20th arriving in Auckland New Zealand on April 22nd
where the tracking information ends and LJ553716520US journey seems to have stalled.

Bummer. Not that I can be of any help other than providing sympathy, I am from GR, Mi
I know of a couple small engine/motor cycle parts suppliers. That and $6 will get you a cup of coffee at barStucks. Hopefully the drain plug will just make a loop around the lower 48 before completing the trip down under to you.

Well I'm hoping they don't charge by the mile either.
As tracking says it arrived in NZ over two weeks ago and I still haven't received it I rang NZ Post International to see what's going on.
The nice lady on the phone checked into it and said, yes it definitely arrived in New Zealand on the 22nd April but looking at the international coding it has departed for Mexico, seriously
She is checking into it and will get back to me.

With all of its travels, I hope the box gets stamped everywhere it has been. Would be quite the colorful package! But in all honesty, I hope you get it soon!

Re: The adventurous journey of LJ553716520US
Latest update is I still haven’t received the item.
I just spoke NZ Post and they informed me that LJ553716520US departed NZ on the 22nd of April headed for Mexico.
I told them it is not showing that on the NZ Post tracking or the USPS tracking site.
The person at NZ Post said they have an internal site that USPS can access as well (but the general public can’t) that shows that LJ553716520US arrived in Mexico on the 27th April with no further movement at this stage.
NZ Post couldn't give me any reason as to why LJ553716520US was sent to Mexico other than they are a transfer station and it was probably forwarded on.
They then told me to contact the sender to take up the matter with USPS.
Buck passed, next problem

... wow... sorry I don't mean to laugh.. but that's jacked-up Dave. What's the spec. on that bolt? Guessing it's USS/SAE threads.. if you were sourcing it from the U.S.
At this point.. you'd be better-off to source another standard bolt.. and have a local machine-shop drill the cross-hole for the wire. I might even have a bolt in my stock that would work. I've had very good success with USPS international parcel-delivery; both incoming and outgoing.

Almost up to my best (worst) experience. I had a USPS parcel leave Chicago for Australia, but it ended going to Poland and back to Chicago three times before someone finally realised that Australia wasn't in Europe. It was addressed and spelled perfectly. No reference to Poland, so I don't get who decides to "vary" their system by sending stuff to a completely unrelated address.

Re: The adventurous journey of LJ553716520US
Hi Roddie
Yes it's a common enough thread 1/2" x 20 but by the time I cut a groove for the o-ring, trim the hex head up, drill a hole for the pencil magnet (which I don't have) and the wire, then send it off to the platers, which will cost more than the new item(plus courier fee) and take a fortnight to get done, then glue the magnet in when it gets back , it seemed like a good idea (and should have been) to just buy one and have it shipped out for half the cost.
I guess we've all had at least one of those "it seemed like a good idea at the time"
Hi Rod
Yes I had one parcel come via Europe but I can sort of understand that because the Netherlands have a province called Zeeland and Denmark has an island called Zealand but it eventually found it way to New Zealand.
If it was me scanning incoming mail at the distribution center and the scanner wanted to send it to Mexico I would immediately think why is mail going to Mexico via New Zealand and would check the destination address. Seeing the parcel was shipped from the US would also tell me something is not right.

Re: The adventurous journey of LJ553716520US
Well I contacted the supplier and they duly sent me a replacement which arrived 10 days later no problem at all.
Case closed or so you would think.
This morning, Monday the 27 of May 2019, at approximately 11.15 am I found LJ553716520US in my letterbox.
I can not see any reason why it went to Japan or why NZ Post shipped it on to Mexico.
Even stranger is the fact that it left Mexico and re-entered New Zealand and was delivered without being tracked.
So now I will contact the supplier and pay for the replacement. Won't hurt to have a spare anyway

Noble of you Dave and the right thing to do.
It's amazing what lengths some companies will go through to maintain customer good will.
Recently my daughter bought 70 bags of Scott's mulch all with the same code. When she spread it she discovered that the shades were significantly different. She took pictures, included the receipt and contacted the company. They refunded the full amount.

I'm glad that you finally received that 1st plug.. It would have bugged me to wonder what happened to it.
Re: The adventurous journey of LJ553716520US
I contacted the Supplier, Parts Giant, Grand Rapids, Michigan, offering to pay for the replacement part and the shipping as the original part had now arrived. Below is their reply.
Quote: You can keep the first part for the inconvenience. I do apologize for the long delay on the item and I appreciate your patience on this item.
Have a great rest of the day: unquote
How about that, giving me the part, and apologizing, and none of it is their fault.
