Cox Engine of The Month
Two Cox engines, gifts, brake fluid, helpful hints, and a rainy day

Two Cox engines, gifts, brake fluid, helpful hints, and a rainy day
A rainy day, no outside work so my attention turned to what else....
The "Brace yourselves" engine and a special gift from Cox Addict an engine from a Cox Mercedes which will replace a standard Cox engine in my #2 Mercedes. I might be able to run this car on Car Day after all.
The Brace Yourselves engine:
I dumped it in a bottle of Dot 3 over night which in the past did nothing to remove paint, but this time it worked miracles loosening the paint so it just rubbed off.
Helpful hint. If you or yours use this type of container from your laundry detergent, when empty fill it with water and put in in your garage, if you have two, rinse it well and fill with fresh water. I used the soapy stuff to rinse off the brake fluid and clear to rinse that then disassembled.
I used a butane torch to melt and clear the soldered vents, and replaced the back plate with an unvented one that Kim gifted me several months ago.
A remarkably clean interior considering the exterior.
It's a true Golden Bee now with a #1 cylinder.
The gift from Cox Addict came with the proper 5cc vented tank, cut off fuel pick-up tube, and a bonus a "W" element glow plug which I immediately set aside and replaced with one from MECOA.
I'm going to test run the Mercedes engine and install it in the number 2 car and run it, then give it a crock pot boil to remove the baked on castor and show it some love before I retire it.

A great transformation! I like your clean up. I had a Bee case last year that was painted, and never thought of brake fluid for cleaning the paint off. Great idea. Also, I will now be in trouble as I will also be using your water bottles from laundry detergent for water in teh garage. Thanks for the tips.

And I also just noticed the Bee backplate. An old one with no markings. Another nice touch.

Yes, Mud says it's one way to tell an early Cox Mercedes engine.
I had tried brake fluid once before to remove paint and dismissed it as near useless. My attempt to correct the record. It works on some paints and not on others.
I'm not 100% sure this engine came from a Cox Mercedes but all signs point to it except it does not have the extended needle.

Also some brake fluids attack the paint, some don't. Depends on the DOT number.
Again, nice clean-ups

Yeah, Dot 3 Kari - The paint eater.....how do I know after 65 years of the stuff.
Works great on your hands too Eric. Handy as I have no water in the garage.
Lip of the reed retainer got crushed on the Golden Bee. I couldn't re-use the original star reed as the retainer clip would not seat in the groove over it so I used a milar reed instead. But I did clear the crush with a jewelers screwdriver.
Thinking maybe the crank pin had something to do with it. First time I have ever seen that.
