Re: Texaco Running Steady
If those 8x4 props slow the top RPM too far down....do not be afraid to experiment with one...I use big Toenail clippers and nibbel a little...re balance then run....Keep notes... done right you will over shoot and cant add length back...so then you know what (Last ) length to cut your remaining propeller to....

8x4 Props Fixed the Texco
Hi Gents
Wanted to pass the info. A few hours ago a transport from NY got me new props. I got 8x4's as recommended in this forum. I fitted the two guys out with the 8x4's and due to the 30-40% slower RPM they both ran identical. They both ran quite good and they both ran almost exactly 5 minutes. They did not fan. However I did hear them slow maybe 50 rpm and then recover. Not a problem just a temp mixture adjustment but didn't affect the rpm much.
So the larger prop has fixed the problem. Thanks for all the great suggestions!

Re: Texaco Running Steady
Hi Ken
Yes. Although I have cars and boats. The planes are the best for me. I really want a motor that can run 5 minutes. Seems I got there. Although these Texacos won't win any speed races that's for sure. If steady slower a bit it's ok. My Medallions squeek three minutes. My TeeDees 2:30-2:45. Granted screaming pretty much but a slow and steady 5 minutes is sounding pretty good.
Thanks

Re: Texaco Running Steady
Just wanted to finish up this conversation for me. After Fred super super kindly sent me some 8x4 props all the way over here to Korea. My two Texacos are running very well. One runs 5:05 and the other runs 5:25 minutes on single tank. The 8x4 prop seems to hold the RPM low enough that the venturi can supply steady enough mixture. Runs quite good. Slight pulsing but just a couple hundred rpm and then returns to high speed but pretty minimal. Really nice prop wash! The hose over the NV seems to be better with a washer pushing it down.
Thanks a million Fred you have really helped!! Kind Regards

Re: Texaco Running Steady
I think you are a bit obsessed with smooth running-very few of our engines will hold constant rpm for any extended length of time-and a variation of +/-50rpm is nothing-even a few hundred rpm is not unusual-and as for in the air-well the prop load will vary depending on whether the model is climbing diving or in level flight. You've got your 5 min running target-now go and enjoy it...perhaps you might also reflect that you achieved it by running the engine on the prop size and rpm regime it was designed for... which is usually a good idea....I find it is usually a good idea to assume the manufacturers know what they are talking about when it come to their own products...!
Can I suggest that money spent on a tachometer is rarely wasted-it solves a lot of guesswork and arguments-and gives you a solid foundation to reference fuel props and plugs against.....and they are ridiculously cheap these days compared to 30 or 40 years ago.

Re: Texaco Running Steady
Thanks Kiwi
Appreciate the comments. I do get out and fly. However I also am very very picky and insist my motors to run as best as possible. So I wanted to thank Fred for helping!! Where I am there are no parts and is next to impossible to get motors complete. Also Mudhen was also awesome on helping earlier too.
NZ is nice spent a few weeks there in years gone by. Fishing East coast. Drone fishing also. For our limits.

Re: Texaco Running Steady
I'm not a fisherman myself-but I know several fellow kiwi modellers who are.....common themes.....something to do with standards, equipment and patience I guess...the point I was making that you may be attempting the impossible if you're hoping to get a Texaco to run in an unvarying rpm fashion over the entire tank-and even if you could achieve this on the bench-(unlikely BTW)-it would not occur in the air...
