Re: hardwood source
We have plenty of ironwood in our woods. If you enroll if forest managment to reduce taxes the state forester comes in and markes all the ironwood to cull out of the woods. They are only interested in the high value lumber like oak, cherry, hard maple, and walnut. The foresters/state also get a percentage of the lumber sale so this is why they cull out unwanted species.
I feel a diverse forest is better than one only looked at with dollar signs which is why none of the 170 acres of woods on this farm will ever be enrolled in forest managment.

You are indeed fortunate to be able to pay full property taxes on your rather large tract of virgin woodland.

This area was clear cut in the ~1860’s. It was predominately white pine and cedar swamps. Then in 1908 a local fire went through. We can still find burnt stumps from that fire.
It’s mostly hardwoods forest but we do have some fairly large white pine.

Nothing to fear from Drop Bears as long as you avoid chocolate (so legend goes).

Re: hardwood source
The link you posted previous is correct. Look at the bark on the tree I cut down and the bark on the wiki page. It pretty much matches.
