Re: Happy 2018!
Tomorrow, the Philly Fliers will have our annual Frosty Balls Fun Fly.Looks like the lighter fluid and propane torch is coming with me to do a bit of pre-warming of engines. I'm looking forward to it but the weather is not looking good. Our long time member Larry Wilks sets up the Coleman stove and we have hot dogs, hot chocolate, coffee, donuts and several other things. Yesterday brought 1" of snow to the already single digit temps. This entire week has been miserable. The gas and oil companies must love it but I sure don't. The Philadelphia Mummers Day parade was literally on the chopping block due to the single digit temps and winds. While I'm not a spectator there, it's a long time tradition which draws thousands outside to the freezing temps. I see the Mummers are going to take the plunge and strut down Broad street tomorrow. I wish them well due to the fancy floats which can be very troublesome in the wind not to mention single digit temps. I myself having worked outside for many years truly appreciate the comforts of a warm house. Unfortunately, no Cox stuff will be brought by my son or myself. That's just too troublesome in these temps. Happy New Year, Ken

Less than 3 and a half hours for me... The rockets are blazing already!
As for the family and me, well no big party for us, but the "traditional" hot dogs are in the oven, potato salad done, fire in the fireplace and the first beer on its way.
Happy New Year Friends

Re: Happy 2018!
Happy New Year to all my buds! Here's hoping we all have another great lap around the sun !!
I spent New Year's Eve prepping Mud Dabber for our Fun-Fly over at Cairo's Airport, even FINALLY repairing some of the tears/punctures in it's VERY vintage Monokote, but have suffered a relapse of the cold that put such a dent in the past week.
The old plane is all ready to rock, so we'll see if the drugs kick in at some point, and make me mobile. I may be celebrating by launching Mud Dabber from the front yard, with a quick lap around the hill just to make a point, then retreat to my blanket/space heater/teepee for the rest of the day!
Got a balmy 3+ degrees, with a north wind over the hill at about 10mph.

Re: Happy 2018!
I made it to the field as planned. Froze my @$$ off . It was 10 degrees upon arrival and snow all around. Geese were covering the entire field all side by side and I don't think you could've squeezed another one in there. Aren't they supposed to fly south? Anyway, I've never seen so many in one gathering. I think due to the clearing the control line circle and the r/c runway offered, the geese had a perfect spot to receive the sun. I would estimate close to 1000 were present. That was at least until we put up one flight and they went haywire circling in the air as the bark of the OS .32 was a sure sign they were no longer welcome. I wanted to fly my Drone .29 but the flight gods were not cooperative today and I lost the needle valve to it during start up. I couldn't locate it and I gave up looking for it. My flying partner Larry made some very good hot dogs. Larry dropped his into the snow due to cold hands. We couldn't stop laughing. I was even more amazed when he brushed it off and kept eating it. The grit must've added to the taste. I had a propane torch to assist in adding a bit of heat to the cylinder head. That worked great until the propane bottle froze up and the gas wouldn't come out. All in all it was an insane crazy day but it goes down in the book of memories as one I won't forget. Two flights and I had enough as the cold was seemingly getting colder as the sun left us. Happy New Year everyone. Ken

Re: Happy 2018!
Frosty skim of snow/sleet central Texas checking in
Slow moving in 21F with 15 knot wind making sure all external water faucets are covered and not freezing
doggies all house pent cuz "Daddy it is cold outside...what is this white stuff?"
Fire place and insert with fan running
Tree and ornaments being put away
Hot toddy getting ready
I just finished a good long chat with my brother in much more colder Utah
Saturday in 54F air I got new internet service... still line of sight broad band but now instead of less than 1Mbps down we now have 9.5 Mpbs down...YEA!
2018 should be a good year for the von Gortler clan
Hope it is good for every CEF friend and colleague

Sounds like a great time Ken. Haven't heard from my buds as how the Cairo Fun-Fly went. I've regressed back into crazy coughing...figure a trip to the doc is in order.
Happy New Year to all the CEF'rs!

Well yes, and at the time I recall posting a response, but once again it disappeared. That happens too much.balogh wrote:Of the CEF members I am one of those seeing 2018 the soonest - in about 5 hours from now. (Rod and others down under have passed it already..) I wish you allahappy new year.
While most of the "State-siders" were still waiting for midnight, it was well past here. Wife & I returned home after a 13.5 hour drive from half way home from seeing our son, who didn't really seem to appreciate the four days of driving we did to get to see him. He wanted his Christmas present when we arrived, but we told him it was $450 worth of fuel to visit him.
We spent NYE asleep in the back of my van in some quiet little town in the middle of New South Wales. No fireworks, no loud music, no honking horns. Just blissful peace & quiet, just how I like it.
(Late) Happy New Year everyone.

Re: Happy 2018!
I enjoyed your narration and pictures Ken, especially the one of the ski equipped plane climbing into a clear blue sky with the geese flying in the background. I would have enjoyed being there. Looks like everything was in place. Hotdogs, buns, gas stove, cups, mustard and ketchup and a trash can to catch the left-overs. A cold but pleasant paradise.

It's been riding around in my van (with a few others) since this past December 20th. Got a Fox .35 on it and new set of cables.
Gonna have to get some better weather conditions before it flys!
