Caveat Emptor....or you pay your bucks and then WTH
Lot and lots of discussion on Ambroid
As we know the OLD formula is no more and a bunch of us got some of the last tubes of the newer lighter runnier stuff
many times at fairly high price per tube just cuz we had to have the crap
In my case, a year or three back we discussed Ambroid and shazam...a link to a Canadian source for about $8 per 1.8 0z tube...cool...even with brother Ken's note about it being too runny I ordered 4 tubes
Yest it was too thin...but post haste I learned to deal with that in my very cheap Tractor supply syringes and needles to get the glue where I desired
There are one or two areas on the Primary Force re-build I wanted to let the thinner Ambroid to flood and set
NOT quite sure how I may have missed it when I got the shipment from Canada
Today (after using only one of the 4 tubes) I grabbed a new tube to open....MY goodness this thing is very light
grab another tube...hummm some heft, feels like it has something inside
Pick back up the lite tube...open....empty, dry, what the hell? (WTH)
I can NOT figure even with a leaky tube how it can be this light....
Grabbed a fuel syringe and put tubing on nozzle and ...sure enough pressure and no detectable air leak
REALLY...the buggers sold me an empty tube for eight bucks..?
OK OK I know this is a MFG error.....
But still ---Dang It
I don't really care about the 8 bucks...I like Ambroid... even the too thin crap....
quick search does not find any more for sale
OH well back to SigMent...and Tight Bond, and my favorite DeLux brand SuperPhatic!
carry on

I have experienced that many times. Go to use the tube and it's half empty. I suppose once their is air space in the tube it's drying or it's evaporating out of the cap. I could smell it in my storage drawer with the lid on. Do they even make it anymore? I used my last tube and it's been Sig-Ment due to not being able to locate it.

I still have some of the old formula (used) in 3.2oz. metal tubes.. and one full unopened plastic 3.2oz. tube. I guess I'm lucky.. and haven't experienced any evaporation. The older metal tubes have "Testors" glue-tips stuck-on the nozzles with common-pins stuck in the spout.
About all I'd use what I have left for now.. is "re-welding" old dried/brittle Ambroid glue-joints on some of my vintage models that were built using it.

This is what I've always used.
It used to be made by Aeroflyte in South Australia until they went out of business. The current owner reproduces this, dope, some model kits etc formerly produced by Aeroflyte. It's crystal clear and quite thin, but I've always prefered it over others. It's Acetate based, smells greaaaaaaaaat and dries really quickly. I actually used to use it to attach tissue to a wing frame before doping. (I didn't know any better, but it worked well). Oh, and sands really well also. There were two grades back in the day when Aeroflyte used to make it. C17 was the regular and C23 was high strength. Looks like C23 is all you can get now.
I just doubt that you will be able to purchase it outside of Australia of even have it shipped, but may be worth looking into for those looking for an alternative.

I get my Testors from Hobby Lobby due to high inventory turn over. The (not so) Local Hobby Shop sorta close to me stopped carrying the stuff because I was one of the few who bought, and the last tubes I bought from him were half full and kinda thick. However he does stock LE and TE material in store so I do get stuff to build from him when needed.

Re: Caveat Emptor....or you pay your bucks and then WTH
I really do like (EVEN) the thinned Ambroid.... but alas...web searching for day came up nada
MY next best is obviously Sig-Ment...pretty close to original Ambroid and same method to use
After that I am sure glad I found DeLux products Super Alphatic.... a thinned Tite Bond that sets very quick.... pricey but I use it a lot....in fact more than thin CA that all brands now suck IMO
BUT beware!!!! this event caused me to look to the rest of my Glue in a tube stash..... am leaning to MFG short or no fill
One of my 5 Sig-Ment tubes is also very very light....never opened, and still in the plastic heat sealed bag
years ago I had it on very good authority that my Bell South land line deliberately added some few .5c to .10c cent calls to each bill by computer random algorithm.... over 2 million customers the profit was enormous...of course they eventually got caught and none of us class action customers ever got a (worth the time to apply) payout.... but the lawyers sure did!.... wink
So I often wonder if:
My can of Rustoleum actually has 12 oz in it?
Is my Mono Kote really 1.8 meters long
Does every 250 tubes of glue only get 4 oz vs 4.5 o or even any
we could go on and on.....corn flakes?
80 count aspirin bottle who every counts?

One would have to assume that you would not willingly buy a tube of air. The only way to be sure it to have recorded the weight when you purchased. It is also well known that the solvents in glues can go off without the tube shrinking.
I do agree buyer beware.

I have heard of the bogus fees/charges being tacked onto billing-statements. Most "product-manufacturers" wouldn't knowingly risk their reputation by screwing their customers. Accidents happen.. and most companies would opt to make good on a product rather than lose sales through word of mouth. These days, negative-feedback through mass-media can wipe-out a product literally overnight.

I thought they were making Ambroid again? Did some concerned moms in a nanny state push for it to be banned because little tommy was sniffing it? All the good stuff is gone as it was either cancerous in the peoples republic of California or deemed harmful to the environment. The good times have passed us.
