Deliberately unaware but still deeply concerned
WARNING!!!
Caution!!
The below words may stray into party politic in the USA...
If you do not desire to delve into these subjects, move on to some other much more interesting posting on CEF: Of which there are many!
Backstory for these thoughts:
Over the last many years there have been numerous thread on other model forums either heatedly debating politics or lamenting the de-evolution of American values
I like to pride myself as much more USA history knowledgeable than most.
I also used to be so enthralled by U.S. Government that I used to know most of the pertinent Facts;
Example the name and something about every sitting Supreme Court Justice, as well as every Cabinet member. Also who a lot of the US Ambassadors were, and what country they we sent to to represent the USA
This all was interesting to me, mostly because my Dad was sent overseas a lot---I went to school with many State Department kids, who's parents were (probably CIA) Embassy people
Another tid bit....by the time I was 15, I had met quite a few people who later became famous or infamous:
LTC Colin Powell or Capt. Oliver North.
Of course I was also introduced to Formosa (Taiwan) President Chiang Kai Shek and later the Chilean President, Agusto Pinochet who ousted Salvador Allende in a Coup de etat (sp?) in the early 70s .
My dad was one of the many advisers to the Ambassadors and these country leaders. Back in those days there were a LOT of social functions that included all state department families and children.
I heard a lot more than my young mind could comprehend as a kid schlepping fresh drinks for the adults. Later in life much of what I saw and heard made a lot more sense
For what it is worth, my Dad had some small part in the IRAN Contra affair ( Oliver North).
I have first hand knowledge that Colin Powell was in on the deal.... This all means nothing to anyone who is not in tune with Nixon/Ford/Reagan politics of the Cold War and the very early beginnings of America's concern about RADICAL ISLAM and lessening concern with the COMMUNIST HOARD
So by now it would seem that I experienced a bit of behind the scenes life relating to some interesting American History. That explains my next 35 years of adult life when I was paying very close attention to every thing local, state, and federal government said or did
So, by the time Obama became President, I was completely invested; to the point of shouting at the TV, joining every org that was of my view, and being more and more distressed and depressed
Wham..bang... CEF... ah distraction... fellowship...good people... faith in humanity...common interests..
Deleted every News channel from my Directv menu...
I have not listened to any news other than brief local channel to see my local weather since 2010
I am vaguely aware Trump is president...I think Pelosi and other butt heads are still in the mix...
but for first time in my life I am dumber than a NYC college student answering Man on the Street questions
I have no clue at all who is current Secretary of State
Please do not drag this thread into deep politics...
It is all about ME bailing, and refusing anymore to be so distracted and disgusted and depressed
AND how much I cherish a lot of my CEF escape
Perhaps I am not alone in not giving a tinkers damn what Trump or any other politician does
Just for the record--- I am not sure about Trump but I intuitively know ----that we did NOT need the other candidate to be pres

Re: Deliberately unaware but still deeply concerned
Amen Fred!!,
I always had a small interest in American politics. About a year ago I had a few life events occur that made me realize how senseless and actually harmful my frustration with American politics was. Since then, I have done as you have. I am distancing myself from all non-local events. I am focusing my efforts on just being as good a person as I can to the perople in my life and to my local community. I have been getting happier and happier as my distance from that which I can not control grows. I like to think I am also becoming a better father, son, brother and person, at least I hope so. And, I am getting back into radio control flying and loving the hell out of it!

Exactly!
Renie and I are now much more engaged with doing good deeds...
Also
We are much more tolerant of our own children's lack of historical knowledge and tendency to be conned by the "media"
We now patiently listen to their POV and then try to fill in some of the history ----in the hope they will at least do a tad bit more research -----before deciding about-- what ever current crusade they are on---is worthy of their effort... we try to promote that each subject---has distinctly TWO (or more) Sides to the whole story
and usually "follow the money" or check SNOPES is a good plan before getting deeply invested in a Cause!

Fred, you instigator you! YOUR first post was "politically correct" in the statement "don't be dragging this into deep politics". Ha ha! Ha. Are we ( you and I ) in such a minority that those in charge just NEVER do what we see as correct?? I too have given up on the blood pressure raising , anger causing discourse in the local / state level of mismanagement. .....but "they" do get "their way" on most issues, mostly tax increases, and the ability to spend those tax dollars with the politically connected. I'm gonna be 65 soon, and have yet in this lifetime seen ANYTHING, change from the comments made during the "public comments" portion of the governments "open meetings "portion of the law making process. Yup, I've given up my soapbox, returned to the safety and sanity of a hobby that makes ME happy, and just recently been relived to hear that the power grab by the FAA as been overturned by a high court ruling? Yeaaaa, one for the little guys!! .....yet still deeply concerned.....

Re: Deliberately unaware but still deeply concerned
In my lifetime every president since Kennedy has affected my life and my family's, both good and bad.
After president's Kennedy's assassination as a kid in the new State of Hawaii I saw citizens turn in firearms from sub machineguns to collectable firearms to be dumped into the ocean by the barge full.
From gun control to the Vietnam war to a friend who was able to receive medical insurance even with a pre-existing condition (cancer). One president's program allowed me to keep my home by lowering my mortgage payments. I was able to retire last year and now spend a lot of time on CEF:lol!:
We are a great country because of God's guidance
I hope our new president loves our living God
God bless

And once the politics fall into these types of forums the BS and arguing starts. We have two other forums that have almost self destructed themselves. I think you've managed to cross into the shark infested waters.

Scanning the Latest Topics list I came across this thread and from the title I immediately thought Fred. Catchy title with a little intrigue attached. Yup, Fred - always well composed and provoking thought.
My life too. I have always been a student of the news going back to John Cameron Swayze through Douglas Edwards, Huntley/Brinkley, Uncle Walter, Peter Jennings, that rascal Dan Rather and those that followed him.
I lived through Watergate and Nixon hating every minute of it, but I considered it my civic duty to stay informed and I still do. The Vietnam protests cut me to the very core, I was military at the time but never served in-country. But my heart went out to those that did and died horrible deaths without the country behind them.
Now, I'm living that hell all over again stoked by a CIC that can't seem to keep his tongue tucked firmly behind his teeth.
I have sworn off both CNN and Fox News both one-trick-pony's. Of the three broadcast networks I consider NBC (Yes NBC) to be the fairest. But if I want mostly unbiased news I tune in (every morning) to PBS and the BBC.
This is a slippery slope. I have always dreaded politics entering this forum but it's here. Beat it to death then be done with it.
Bob
