Stupid question Alert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Appologies in advance guys but............
The ebayed left handed starter springs, are they to
fire the engine up to run clockwise?
Or are they the 'correct' direction?

Re: Stupid question Alert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They are coiled in the opposite direction, so yes, they run the engine clockwise. You can use them on pushers, or with a lefthand prop.

Additionally, on twin engine applications counter-rotating props help overcome the effect of engine torque.

Re: Stupid question Alert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If running a pusher engine it is recommended you use a brass drive plate.
Re: Stupid question Alert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Left hand springs actually start the engine counter-clockwise (non-conventinal). Rotation is measured from the pilot's seat and not when standing in front of the aircraft

Never thought about it that way, I bet it causes a lot of confusion!
Re: Stupid question Alert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is technically incorrect as pusher engines still turn in the same direction (clockwise) as tractor engines (pulling forward) except that the prop pitch and thrust is reversed.
The LH spring is meant to be used with LH props such as this one:
http://coxengines.ca/product.php?productid=83&cat=9&page=1
whereas the engine still runs as tractor but the prop turns counter-clockwise.

Re: Stupid question Alert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Then I have been running my engines wrong...
I use a left hand starter spring, flip the prop over backwards for more thrust, and run it backwards. Brass plate, of course.

Re: Stupid question Alert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You can only do this effectively with a prop that was designed for LH use such as the 3-blade LH ones we sell.
Flipping a RH prop like this will work somewhat but not well due to the dynamics of the inherent leading and trailing edges.

Re: Stupid question Alert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Funny story:
I have a cox 5x4 prop that will only usually run backwards.
It took me ages to realise until one dy with a diesel pee wee I righted the prop screw then started up the engine and got a face full of diesel
Seriously.
Surestart ran backwards
Pee wee ran backward
Pee wee diesel ran backwards
Tee dee .020 diesel even ran backwards a bit.

Re: Stupid question Alert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Actually, let me re-phrase this as I did not read your post correctly.
What I was trying to say is that every prop has blades that have leading and trailing edges and are meant to rotate in a specific direction only and this rotation cannot be reversed with the expectancy of like performance.
However, if one maintains the designeated rotation, they wil work just the same and provide pusher instead of tractor performance; and vice-versa

Re: Stupid question Alert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And yes, all Cox reed valve engines run equally well in both directions.
Re: Stupid question Alert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is an advantage Reed valves have ove FRV and RRV
Re: Stupid question Alert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seems like left rotation on a single engine control line model would help keep the lines tight.

Be worth a try!
You could try it with one of your little stinkers.

Congratulations Indra!
If an engine ran his entire life the 'normal' direction. Is it still capable to run backwarts?
I think parts are all worn in one direction, maybe the other way there will be more friction?
Got some of the #334 LH starters to, they have a black ring.

Guess it wasn't so stupid, looks like a few of us learned something, myself included.

Yeah it would.
The drive plate and crankcase wear out on one side.
