Cox Engine of The Month
Recipe for disaster!
Recipe for disaster!
1 tach race engine
4 (too short) hex head mounting screws
1 4.5 x 4 unbalanced prop
1 dose of stupidity
See where this is going?
So I decided to test my tach race engine, took my time getting ready fuel, prime, glow, needle setting etc.
Fired it off with a 6x3 too see how it runs. Looks good sounds good. I run the tank dry and throw on the 4.5...... Well it fired right off into a high pitched scream engine starts shaking violently. I see a mounting screw fall out and I reach over to pinch the fuel line. Too late the engine comes off the mount shoots between my legs, bounces across the garage floor. As is comes free it yanks off the fuel line it decides too squirt some fuel in my eye for good measure.
Lessons learned? Yes, check prop balance! And make sure your hardware is adequate for the job at hand...... Possibly put a proper engine test stand on the wish list.
Got lucky, I am in one piece as is the engine. I even located my mounting screws. Not that they will be used in that setup again.

Yeah I have had this before It happened to my surestart that came loose just after i stopped filming.
Re: Recipe for disaster!
My stupididty pic. A Gmark 061 decided to leave it's mark when a mount screw wiggled out.
Now it's a pass thru type of mount, with nylon lock nuts behind (or under). NO more lagging to a weak 2x4 or whatever.

Ron ---
I know this is a serious safety issue and certainly am glad all is well, but I must confess, I chuckled at the keyboard visualizing what you described. I can just see the engine leaping off the stand, giving you a squirt of fuel as if to say, "Take that, Ron!", then flying between your legs. It must have truly been a "Holy S**t!" moment.

"Tach race??,,I'M OUUTA HERE!!!,,,ZINNNGGG!!
Yes, very glad that you are ok.
That was just a paint brush stroke of a prop that got me. felt the wind more than the cut.

Re: Recipe for disaster!
I have had a mount screw wiggle out on me, one out of four. It was short and the wood was saturated with fuel. I killed it before anything else happened. (Had a throttle on it)
I always avoid standing in front of the engine, and out of the prop arc. Worst thing that ever happened was from my own stupidity. I over-wound an old snap starter with my finger on it. it snapped, and put a gash in my thumb. Couldn't fly RC for a few days.

Re: Recipe for disaster!
Had the same experence and result when running my O&R .23 as a kid in the early fifties.
Nasty way to gain experience but lesson learned that has stayed with me today.
Ny-loc mounting nuts always ESPECIALLY on larger engines.

Re: Recipe for disaster!
PV, Good cut, that was just a warning bite. Could have been much worse.
Andrew, safety issue yes, that was the main reason I posted. The amusing part was a bonus.
Indra, you can slowly watch the engine come loose in that pic. Seemed to run well though if not a little unhappy with the needle from time to time.
I am using a hardwood mount, which is probably getting a little soft due to castor spray, need to invest or weld up a proper mount with through bolts as suggested.

Re: Recipe for disaster!
Glad you found your fingers...err your screws! I'm in need of a real test stand too.
Failure to preflight caused a weakened nose to finally come off of my plane in mid flight. On its way to freedom, it leaned over to the right and sawed the lead edge spar and a rib in half. It made for a very ugly landing. Looked like someone had shot it down. Funny though. Too bad I didn't have the camera rolling that day.

Re: Recipe for disaster!
Safety has not always been top priority with me. As I age I tend to think things through more. Sometimes as in this case I revert back to my youth. 2 years ago I decided to kickstart a motorcycle with my hand. It backfired and put the kickstarter into my hand cost me inside and outside stitches and my hand tires quicker even now. Figured out why it is called a kickstarter though. Lol
Glad to see/hear we all have done stupid things.....

Good idea, I doubt .049's would take off a finger but, the .23 just might have.

Your right about that. I don't expect this engine to live long and I think it knows it.
