My Ukey repair!

My Ukey repair!
Actually it's turning into a humidity watch rather than a project. We got 3" on top of 6" of rain and the place is a slog pit again. Wayne went to get a new sump pump for his house. When they flood the drains and toilets have a full head and nowhere to go. Thank goodness I'm connected to the City... for now, at least. So wet air rules out my taking the Twister box of parts out there, and when I get cleared by the flight surgeon, I'll need something light and nimble to try flying. That would be the good ol' Ukester. Made from a pine stick and styrofoam wings. Nothing on that bag o' bones for damp air to bother.
I was, however, imagining a fix that won't work as planned. I didn't know there was no cutout in the fuselage for the airfoil. They are separate wings held by dowels that pass through the fuse. So what I'll do is shave the outboard fuselage of all remnants of the wing and drill new holes for new dowels. The inboard wing is still held in place by its original dowels, but for the sake of strength, I'm going to imbed two more, just as if the others aren't already there.
The old wing is a mess where I slathered it with epoxy at the contest... yeah, it did finally harden. So I will cut an inch or so off to square it up, and glue a new piece of styrofoam to the root to get it back to the proper length. I can sand it to shape and paint it with thin Titebond and cover it with something... silkspan, Monokote. etc.
Now for alignment. There are many ways to make sure the wings are symmetrical, but I have an idea. I happen to have a pair of 24" foam wing cores in their original packing, from which they were cut. I'm going to raise that packing off the table so I can suspend the plane while setting up and each wing will fit almost* perfectly in the airfoil shaped mould. It'll be just like a Bob Hunt Lost Foam Jig.
* "Almost" meaning the chord is the same but the airfoil is slightly thinner. But I think it will serve my purpose just fine.
Sorry I don't have pics, it's just too wet to go out there, but I'm so tickled with my repair idea I decided to write about it anyway. I promise I'll illustrate it tomorrow evening. I hope y'all understand what I'm describing. I think it's a great Idea.

That's a great pic, yes I can use it. The newsletter comes out early next week.
Also if any of our members want me to add you to the MCLS Newsletter mailing list, PM me your e-mail and I'll get you on the distribution list.

Re: My Ukey repair!
Okay, time to fix this thing. Today I cleaned up the wing root with the dremel.
Then I used the spars as a reference for a 90 degree angle. The whole wing is tapered in every direction, so that's the only way I could get an accurate line. I taped a level to it and made sure my scroll saw's table was level too. I had to watch the bubble and the line and take it slowly, but I think I got a good straight cut.
First I need to glue a block of styrofoam to the end to bring it back to its original length, and shape it to match. Unless otherwise advised I'll use white Elmers glue for that. Then I have to bore holes for dowels. I don't know if there is any real reason for them to extend into the other wing or not, but I'll sink them at least 14" into the repaired wing. Of course they'll be sunk all the way into the 1/2" pine fuselage. Epoxy will be used for this.

Re: My Ukey repair!
It has! I put 2hrs and 45 minutes on the Twister last night too. My glass isn't even close to big enough for the whole wing, so I'll figure that out after I break free from Thanksgiving obligations. My table is 8' if I clear it off, but not even close to flat. That time was mostly spent organizing and cleaning my project area, and then cutting laser-cut ribs from their balsa sheets.Kim wrote:Hmmm...it would seem that the 'Building Mojo' has returned...or is at least peeking around the corner !
After I wrote about the Ukey, Wayne called and said he was going to get me a new pair of wing cores from the shadowy Ukey guy who apparently still operates in obscurity doing very little business... because nobody knows he still makes the kits. So I'll wait and see if that really happens. Meanwhile he has another one i can use till the wings come.
The back side of the table has the Stuntman23x3 project, ready for wood-cutting.
So, yeah, My building bug is back. As long as my shoulder allows it. Oddly, flying doesn't bother it, but the motions of building, even light stuff Kills it. That's why I'm up at 7:00 pounding acetaminophen, getting ready to try and catch another Z.
Yyyyyaaaawn... see y'all later.
Have a happy TG, all.

Good NEWS and Good Snooze (sorry---couldn't help it!) to you sir!
Must be something in the air as Wayne's 'Buster' is parked, waiting for it's debut, the Lazy Bee is in the process of getting a new bow laminated for it's replacement rudder (time-consuming, but fun when you're in the mood), Mud Dabber is ready to go, the Scientific Golden Hawk just needs lead-outs and it's ready for it's trip back in time, and 'The Secret Renovation' has some new 1/16th control horns sleeved and super-glued to it's secret tail surfaces!
Weird thing is (OK, it's all pretty weird) that this has all been done in 30-45 minute work-spurts. I've got a little mind game (yes, for little minds) going where I only allow myself a short, measured time, with a hard-focus on the set-up to do the actual work, then doing what I can before shuttering the place and doing something else.
Don't know how long this will last, but the airplanes are sure catching it for now !!!
