Cox Engine of The Month
My P-40 gets some parts.
My P-40 gets some parts.
Spotted this on ebay a couple of weeks ago.
As you can see, it was pretty sad, with major cracks in the fuselage and wing root.
I need a few bits and pieces to restore my old original Testors P-40. It didn't attract one bid at $20, but the postage to Australia was over $55 AUD. I contacted the seller and asked if he would consider stripping it of good parts and sending it cheap. He said yes and I offered $35 AUD shipped, to which he agreed. Here's what I got.
The guy even peeled off all the stickers and included them.
Engine is good with working glow head. Oiled and primed it and she fired up. Spring starter even still works. I only really needed the undercarriage to complete mine. Not a bad buy really. That's about $25 USD shipped.
Rod.

Yep. Got it when I was about your age. (That's 40 years ago). Mum & Dad couldn't afford to buy me a Cox PT-19. The Testors was cheaper. Fired it up in the laundry on Christmas day with my cousin. It burst into life first try but was so noisey (with a house full of guests) I shut it down. That thing would never run again until I discovered Cox fuel and fitted a bigger prop a couple of years later. The first thing to break was the spring starter, followed by the undercarriage. I think I broke that by whipping the plane around on the lines 'cos I couldn't get the engine running. Once I got her running again I put in quite a few flights, but ended up breaking a con-rod. I replaced that with one from a mate and flew some more. Even with all the failures I loved that plane. Glad I hung on to it. Time for a restoration, once I build one of Rogers Bipe kits.

I also started out with a testors Fly'em' model. Mine was the P-51D (the silver one) and believe it or not I did the same dang thing too when i got it, Christmas day but instead of lighting er off in the laundry room, I went a step further and did it in the living room right in front of the tree. scared the bejesus out of everyone in the house thing would turn too with that tiny little prop! Had fun with that plane even though it was a pain to get running and i had limited fuel (The testors fuel that came in the little glass bottle) i still have the engine for it. I would love to find another P-51 just to have it, Ahh memories.
Glad you found some parts to get er up and going! (Bandit)

Brand new fuselage with under carrage I don't know if you've seen it ends in 10 hours though
Hope this helps! (Bandit)

Thanks Bandit, but by the time I get it to AU it'll cost me $100
Hey, I mentioned engine parts I used to repair mine I got off a friend. He got a P-51 Fly-em around the same time but I didn't know him that well then. He had exactly the same frustration starting it, but he wasn't so patient as me and ended up stomping on the plane without it ever running. Chucked everything in the garbage but the engine. A couple of years later he gave me the engine.

It looks like the tail section is missing, probably was under the white blanked off section.
It took me awhile to finally complete my P-40 too Rod. It was missing the tail section, prop/spinner and the landing gear. I finally found all of those parts and put it back together.
I never got so frustrated that I stomped on a model airplane. My wife? That's another story.
