How to Drill out the Venturi on Plastic Backplates
I have a black horseshoe backplate from Bernie. To what diameter do you drill it out? was it .082"? How do you do it? How do you remove the fuel nipple?
Also, what is the best glow head for maximum top-end RPM?

a little help
I have a few answers, but bear in mind I have never done anything with a plastic or horseshoe backplate,(yet, but soon will) so hopefully someone else can answer that better.
I did take notes on modifying a blackwidow or babebee. I`m not certain about the venom or killer bee, but the black widow did at one point have the largest diameter of the reed valve049`s, you could bore that out to .089", using a #43 drill bit and still hold reliability, but was advised not to go larger or sacrafice reliability and easy starting.
The plastic backplates, or at least the ones I have have the spraybar running through the intake port, therefore it should in theory be a larger diameter due to this interference of flow.
So bearing that in mind, my info may be of no help at all if your intake hole is already larger than that size.
If I didn`t help at all, maybe you have the info for your next project

This is also better answered by someone else who has been doing it much more. You can remove the spray bar by removing the needle, and then remove the black plastic collar that is holding it in place (you should be able to get under it with a small flat head screwdriver or a small chisel if it is too hard to get between it and the backplate). You should also be able to push the spray bar right out once it is off.

Thanks, that was very helpful. How do you measure the intake? Do you have to remove the brass assy?

Thank you for all the help, but I have decided not to mess with it. I have already done more harm than good by scratching up the fuel nipple and making the needle a loose fit.

Absolutely no idea lol. Probably a couple of 100.
The biggest RPM increase will come from using our SPI cylinder/piston sets, insert-style glow head conversions and Killer Bee cranks.

Nope, regular brass needle valve like all the 049 production engines. You can use the regular brass one,

Are you sure it doesn't have a finer thread? My friend has a Killer Bee .051 and I remember noticing it has a finer thread then my regular surestart-product engine needles. I also tried it in one of my surestarts and I couldn't get it to turn in without ruining something. None of my post Estes ones have the finer thread valve. No, I'm not getting these backplates mixed up with the postage stamp backplates.

I purchased the KB backplate, KB needle valve, and a few other small things today. I have done every thing I can to make a speed demon other than the insert head.

I'm sure, at least about Bernie's, because I used my KB needle in my Medallion and it has regular threads. I called my friend earlier and asked him to compare the needle treads of his Killer Bee .051 and his Surestart and he said the Killer Bee one is much finer. He then told me that he had to change the needle valve and spray-bar awhile back when he got the engine at some swap meet because the needle was bent by the threads and then forced into the spray-bar. He told me he removed the replacement needle and spray-bar from a white backplate.
So I suppose I was tricked... I don't have a pre-Estes Killer Bee so after I seen that, I figured it was one of the special things that was left out on the post-Estes Killer Bees or only a .051 red backplate thing.
After thinking about it for awhile, I might order a few red Killer Bee .051 backplates from Bernie and swap the needle and spray-bar with the needle and spray-bar from my 290 postage stamp backplate in one of them.
So I suppose I was tricked... I don't have a pre-Estes Killer Bee so after I seen that, I figured it was one of the special things that was left out on the post-Estes Killer Bees or only a .051 red backplate thing.

Once I had a new KB backplate that had a loose spraybar that would turn when I turned the needle. Before I ever exposed it to fuel, I glued it in with JB Weld. I let it cure for several days, but it came loose again. Is there a better way to secure those? I had heard JB was the trick.

Try a hot quick epoxy Rusty, it's better for a plastic to metal glue I found. Rub some 60-80 grit emery cloth on the pieces if you can, or a dremel flapper wheel.
The Locktite 5 min epoxy is some pretty agressive stuff.

To my knowledge the 049 and 051 Killer Bees were first introduced in 1995. I have some and have pulled the needle valves. The thread is definitely the same as the brass needle valves from the more recent Surestart engines.
The respective OEM Cox drawing confirms the thread as 2-80.

Yeah, or the insert style Bernie sells. I have a TeeDee head, the one with the serrated top.
