Ain't No Sech Thing As An "ARF"
'Least that's what it seems like in my world...
Might be easy to tape and pin the thing together and make it LOOK like an airplane, but that don't mean squat!
Didn't like the fuel tank, and REALLY didn't like the way it was plumbed, so used a big Sullivan tank and added a firewall doubler to cover all the "Castor Ducts" leading to it's unpainted innards.
Felt obliged to shore up the back of the firewall 'cause it looked a little wimpish.
The magnet-equipped, removable hatch is gonna be sealed like King Tut's tomb once I get all the stuff run and locked down...I HATE castor cancer...
Didn't like the wire tailwheel set-up and the skinny wire pushrods, sooooo......
Don't like flex hinges at all, and can't STAND un-pinned hinges not matter what type they are...
Pretty little wheels and their dressings are cute, but tend to suffer in hard-core mud flying. Figure the struts will get replaced with piano wire and a hardwood block in the fuse, but that'll have to come later.
There IS a good-size chunk of space in the forward fuse that's not doing anything so, SOMETHING is gonna be carried, dropped, packed, or dispersed from here once the plane and I have become friends.
So, at least I'm a bit closer to getting this big dog airworthy...may even beat it's first anniversary in the Skunk Works...

I think the Kadet is a really great looking plane. Good work turning her into a proper tundra machine.

Re: Ain't No Sech Thing As An "ARF"
I understand why you did all those additional measures, Kim. The ARF's as good as they are certainly lack a few things in details that need some attention for continued longevity in flying. I got a Great Planes Big Stick 60 from someone getting out of the hobby for next to nothing sans engine. It had been repaired before; tail had some stressors due to type of construction and notching for the elevator that provided a weak stress point. It was repaired hastily, I redid the joint. The main landing gear was not supported behind and again was hastily repaired. I added ply shear panel to transfer loads to the next bulkhead behind the landing gear. Plus I replaced the weak bottom under the fuel tank with basswood.
Rather than deviate off topic, here are the repairs I made in this thread:

Re: Ain't No Sech Thing As An "ARF"
Man, you cranked out some work on that puppy ! Looks like it turned out great !
I'm still thumping away on the Kadet, with a couple breaks to do a lot of similar stuff to the Space Walker ARF, not to mention trying to restore a friend's Midwest Malibu to flying status (it ain't pretty!), so the shop is hopping!
This morning, I sealed up the tank hatch and am ready to pull everything off the firewall and coat it with the last of my old can of clear Formula U. Gonna work on other stuff while that cures.
While I had a tub of epoxy mixed up, I took down my 1984-built MK-1 Kadet "Mud Dabber" for some internal bracing during it's fourth or fifth rebuild.
Then turned my attentions to my friend Mark's Malibu:
My restoration processes can be somewhat "Rustic"......hope he likes tail-draggers, 'cause I'm sending it's 'training wheel' home in a box !!
The Malibu's new firewall is gonna be held to it's fuse by a blend of epoxy, CA, fiberglass, some ply doubling, and a few dozen wood screws !
Gonna recycle as much of the other stuff as possible...he ain't wanting to buy new hardware, and I'm tapering down my donations...
So the show goes on....

Something's gone wrong with the server, either the hosting imaging server or the forum server. Since emoticons aren't showing, I would suspect the forum server. [i]Additional note: The fact that the forum's web pages are taking too long to load tells me that somethings going on, perhaps a denial of service (DOS) attack?dckrsn wrote:Damn, I was looking forward to those photos.
