i have an ohlsson&rice tether car motor and it needs help
i got it from my grandfather for a gift, he told me to do whatever i wanted, keep it in the condition or try to fix it up. well knowing me i tried to fix it up and in the process, i got everything clean and all the gas lines and holes clear. it looked like there was gas left sitting in it for a while. anyway, i put it back together and i pulled on the pull starter, and the chord broke:( so i looked around for new chord and i couldn't find any what so ever. i tried many different chords, and they all kept ripping when i pulled on them , so i thought about the pull start assembly, so i took the whole thing apart and , then me and my dumbness, took out the spring. so that's all screwed up. i couldn't put the spring back in and now it's just sitting there. does anyone know where i could get a whole other pull start assembly like with the spring and the string all rigged up already????? i really want to give it back to him for his birthday for like a child hood memory but i cant give it to him like this...where could i get another one of those for an O&R tether car motor. anytime i look for it i always find airplane motors, its like no one has CAR motors anymore!!! what do i do?

Any pics? I don't think I've ever seen one. I may be able to give some ideas on what to do or how to fix it.
Re: i have an ohlsson&rice tether car motor and it needs help
Is it a flat spring like a tape measure has? While that type is not "easy" to reload, it is possible. You need it load it into a flexible hoop, like a hose clamp or masking tape ring. Once it is loaded into a large container, you shrink the container while winding it tighter.
I have reloaded recoil springs on lawn mowers and outboard motors with this method and it works well. Take your time, as long as there are no kinks there will be no problems.

You can order some small diameter dacron cord from a rigging shop (sailboats). It probably is metric, but that will be fine.
Maybe not metric...

Shipping will probably be more than anything else.

RE:
i will have to see if i can wind it up, when i took it out, i literally just pulled it out like its probably never gonna make it again, i mean i could try, and i looked at the line thank you for the link. and it is like a tape measure. i will take a picture, but do you guys know if there are any ready to go pull assemblies pre-wound, and with the string already on?

one other thing
i was looking at some old Cox motors like the one out of the command jeep, it had a pull starter on it and i was wondering if i could some how convert it to the ohlsson and rice car, but i would have to post a pic in the morning to show you guys what i mean. also maybe i could convert something out of the sure start or one of the airplanes motor to make it run again, pretty much all im looking for is anything that has to do with a pull starter. i will have to try after work tomorrow to rewind the spring, if it works, then it will be ready to run, i looked at the line and i found what i need, it was the 1/16th, and it looks durable enough.

yeah lets scratch the recoiling
okay so i saw that it was only 9 30, since the last post, so i tried to recoil the spring, it was going nicely, and then i got to the first kink, lets just say there's no coming back from that anytime. i un-kinked it and it was really brittle, so it snapped and it was halfway through and there were more kinks and i didn't want to risk anymore so...any idea's? new spring, do they even make them anymore? do we even need to have a pull start. i looked and when i put the motor back together, there's this centrifugal clutch, and when i spin that by hand, it pumps the piston just that same as the pull would, so could i do that by hand. i mean it would still bring the fuel up and it would hit the glow plug. i dont know what to do any more:(

I mentioned this before for someone else, but if the wheel will spin the engine then all you need to start it is a bicycle.....
Flip the bike upside down spin the pedals to get the back tire spinning set the tether car wheel against the bike tire and it should spin the engine over and start it.

that's a good idea i'm gonna try that...i cant upload a picture yet apparently i have to wait 7 days. the motors just taken apart that's all is seen. and i was wondering...i saw that Cox international has new piston heads, with the glow plug, head and rod already assembled, would that fit into the O&R motor?

I'm thinking no. What size O&R is it?

This is the Test/Practice Forum, this is here for people to play with forum features and make test posts. Topics posted in here are automatically removed in 7 days. Would you like me to move this to another forum section?
RE:

Well, if it's an O&R Midjet .049 it takes an odd little glow plug. I don't know how many types of .049's O&R made. Post a picture when you can as we have a good number of collectors on here that could identify the engine for you.

These scans are from American Model Engines Encyclopedia, they can help ID the engine. I see the O&R tether cars with that engine on eBay from time to time, never seen parts.

Ok,
Well then to answer your previous question nothing on the Cox engines will interchange. I do have a NIP glow plug for one of those.

RE:
oh...do you think a new piston rod would fit at least, maybe not the whole casing and such, or is it totally different? me and my grandpa tried to turn the thing over and we busted the rod up pretty bad:(

Your beat bet at this point would be to remove the engine. Dissassemble clean it and reassess.
I doubt a Cox piston assy would fit, unless by some stroke of luck the bore and stroke is identical.
You might get lucky on Ebay. Cox did make car engines and they might be modified to fit.
