Barn find rebuild, meet the screaming phoenix
I took apart the barn find engine I got in a lot of 8 reed 049's. This engine is equipped with a muffler and a Kavan tank extender. The engine was locked solid, crankshaft as well as piston could not be moved.
I had everything soaked in a jam jar filled with alcohol, then cleaned the parts with a tooth brush. In order to free the piston and crankshaft, the crankcase was just placed on the jaws of my vice and the cylinder was heated with a small gas torch. Because of the muffler, the cylinder could not be reached very well. It took a few heating sessions to free the lot.
When dismantling the cylinder piston, the exhaust ports and bypass ports were visible on the piston, due to the position where it sat for years.
I am waiting for a gasket set that is on its way. I also replaced the prop bolt as the old one was bent. There is some play on the ball joint as well.

Barn find rebuild
GO Lieven!
That's what I like doing, taking something that's looks trashed and fixing it. It's usually cheaper, sometimes, occasionally, well maybe Sometimes I look back and think I could have got a new one in the box for what I've spent on that but you can't buy the pleasure of looking at something that was trashed and now due to your efforts it's completely serviceable again

Nice Job Lieven! Like Dave mentioned; There's nothing like the satisfaction you get, when you restore something that's been neglected! The fuel pick-up looks good too.. I'll bet that this engine wasn't run too many times. Are the other 7 engines in similar condition?
Re: Barn find rebuild, meet the screaming phoenix
Very nice Lieven
Great to see this work on a ald engine.
Hope to see it run soon.

Good job Lieven !
With a Kavan kit, this is now an unusal setup.

Isn't it amazing how tough these engines are? That is going to be a nice engine when you are done.

Re: Barn find rebuild, meet the screaming phoenix
Thanks for your comments. Below the other 7 engines:
2 horseshoe product engines. 1 will serve for the restoration of my Cox F15, I recently found back at my parents home.
1 290 with a #1 cylinder.
1 QZ
3 engines with a stunt tank, bolted together in the past, or ex QRC's? 1 engine has got a tapered crankcase and a #2 cylinder. Several have the TD head. The visual condition was the same of all engines. The QRC's and the QZ were frozen solid. On all engines, I separated the tank or backplate from the engine and cleaned them with alcohol without going mad for the moment. I heated the locked engines to get them turning again. Then I bolted everything together with original gaskets and a squirt of oïl.
The lot came with the usual Cox props still bolted on, a battery plug, 2 spanners and 2 independant fuel tanks.

Re: Barn find rebuild, meet the screaming phoenix
I find it relaxing to rebuild engines.
I'll give you a tip though, heat your oven to 200ºF (94ºC) and put the engines on a cookie sheet with tinfoil. Place your engines and tanks in there (no plastic) and let them heat up. Will be an even heat, unlike the torch your using, will work much better. Then just pull one engine out at a time and finish with the disassembly.

Travis,
Thanks for the suggestion. As I live in an apartment and really don't care to fire up a torch in a multi unit home, this is an option for a couple of my stubborn abused bees.

Its funny we talk about torches, just the other day I was going through some of the junk my father kept in the garage and found a mini torch. It works off of butane, you just put in a cigarette lighter without the rolling sparker part and it uses that as the fuel tank. I don't know how hot it can get, and it certainly wont be as powerful as a regular propane torch, but it is still pretty cool.

Re: Barn find rebuild, meet the screaming phoenix
Today, I assembled the engine again with new gaskets. I reset the ball - socket. I borrowed a muffler spring from a QZ.
What did it cost?
- purchase : 5,00 EUR
- tune up kit : 1,46 EUR
- venturi gasket set : 1,46 EUR
- long prop screw (3) : 1,46 EUR
- total : 9,38 EUR =~ 12,47 USD

Re: Barn find rebuild, meet the screaming phoenix
Thanks for your comments. I was thinking of waking you up with a sunday morning scream.
With plenty of enthousiasm, I set up my Work mate for the first trials. The engine didn't get any further than the classic 5 explosions after you flip the prop. Cylinder and surrounded areas were plenty of fuel. Too rich ( 3 turns) ? Reed problem? Changing the reed din't improve things. I then noticed a lot of vertical play of the crankshaft. On the downstroke, air or mixture was escaping behind the prop washer. Could it be that more mixture was pumped away through the crankshaft bore instead of going up the ports? I replaced crankshaft and cank case as well as the piston. All "used but still good" parts. I had to close the needle till 1/2 turn from fully closed before it would run smoothly and at constant speed.

Re: Barn find rebuild, meet the screaming phoenix
Glad you got her running Lieven, congratulations.
Just curious, did you use a gasket on both ends of the venturi
extension? Having to run with the needle so far closed sounds
like the classic venturi leak, where tank fuel is being sucked
directly into the venturi. I use a dart shaft o-ring on one end,
and stock Cox gasket on the other. Good seal.
I noticed you had no outer tank leaks though, and thats quite
a feat in itself.
Nice restoration. Looks great!

I once tried to find an audio tach for my desktop PC. I'd settle with one for my Windows phone but that's a stretch as no one cares to write cool stuff for those. Can you tell me about yours?1/2A Nut wrote:12,958 rpm with my audio tach app.

Re: Barn find rebuild, meet the screaming phoenix
Yes Rusty would be happy to help:
Readings have been monitored watching photo cell tachs and amazing enough this thing is spot on within 20rpm
It can be set for RC use
2 or 4 cyl
low rpm pre set and high rpm narrows its -\+ losses

Re: Barn find rebuild, meet the screaming phoenix
That is useful info. I will try to download that.
Bob, I used 2 Cox venturi gaskets. I think it should seal correctly because the engine ran until the tank was completely empty.

Oh well, I thought I was on to something.

It would have sucked air once it got below the venturi, and
that obviously didn't happen.
Carry on.
