Disgruntled pee wee's
So, I have two beautiful little .020's. I spent some time polishing the cases installing new starter springs and installing rebuild kits in them. They look brand new. Problem is they both run like crap. Neither will run unless I run the needle valve out to about 5 turns, they surge and flutter. One will run well until I pull the glow clip and then i starts to burble then dies. The other runs with the clip off but, I have to hold my finger on the needle valve to keep it steady. The rpm's increase as I go rich? What gives and they both do it! Any ideas?

Re: Disgruntled pee wee's
Included in your rebuild kit, did you replace the venturi gasket? This sounds like a venturi gasket problem... I have also had a problem with the placement of the "e" clip, I had it upside down. For the needle, try a small piece of fuel tubing to apply more pressure to keep it still and it will also help in sealing the threads. Perhaps air is leaking from the needle valve and could be causing this problem.

Yep, new venturi gaskets, which is the right way on the clip. I installed it so the "tang" applied pressure on the mylar reed.

I also tried the silicone tubing trick in place of the spring on the needle valve as I assumed air was being sucked around the needle. Ran the same, no better, no worse.

The tang should not touch the reed -- it's retained only by circular portion. If the tang presses against the reed, it will not be able to float during the intake cycle.

Just what I was going to say, was just looking for a picture!
Re: Disgruntled pee wee's
Yup, tang away from the reed. Did the same thing once and had the same symptoms.

Re: Disgruntled pee wee's
It's easy to trap a reed also by the clip if it isn't seated all the way down and it can roll under the outer part of the clip in the groove.
Before you go on after putting in a reed, check to see if its free to float with a toothpick, or by blowing back and forth in the venturi. It should shut off and on very solid, no leaks or buzziness.

Yeah, the picture was taken before I cleaned up a cheap eBay engine.

Do you realize that NEW PeeWee .020's are available from some vendors for $45 as "raw stock" lacking the original packing container only?

True but they don't have that lovely red tank!
Re: Disgruntled pee wee's
So? One may always be added if desired.
Doesn't make any difference how the TD .010 runs or does it? Only a hard-core collector would care.

True but the later .010s did not run as good as their older brothers.

It's tempting. I have both of these for under 40.00 right now and I have a tee dee .020 en route courtesy of Nitro. So hopefully that will suffice for a while. A new backplate would be nice though to replace my broken tab.

Small scale anodizing is really cheap and very doable should you ever want to make your own red tank.
