Guys,

I posted this over on Stuka Stunt and Stunthanger, but thought I should ask here as well.

Hello,

The folks over at the Cox Engine Forum are having a 1/2A profile scale reed speed contest this fall.

I was asked by the CD to be the prize coordinator for the event, usually we request prizes from ExmodelEngines and/or Cox International. However seeing as we beat those two up pretty bad I decided to ask here and on Stunthangar for help.

We are looking for prizes to award to the top three contestants. Anything anyone could provide would be most appreciated. Since this is a Cox Engine event, donated items of a 1/2A nature wether it be kits, engines or parts would be most welcome.

So, if anyone has anything they would like to see go to a good home please let me know here or through PM. If anyone wishes to speak to me in person please send me a PM for my phone number.

Respectfully,

Ron Cribbs

Ron,

May I respectfully suggest that the participants wishing to compete be charged a modest entry fee?  You could even have two groups.  Those who only want to get the honor an the glory could enter for free; while those who want the prize pay the fee.  Ten guys throwing $10 in the pot could pay for a very nice high performance reedy, and the sponsor's contribution could cover second and third. And paying an entry fee would show the sponsors that the competitors were dedicated to the hobby (the sponsors would sell more in the long run).

I'm not trying to be a jerk.  But if we were bowlers, the lanes would cut us a deal and throw in a trophy, but we would still have to pay something.  Even my 90 year old mother throws in $3 bucks to a coffee shop so she and her friends can have a couple tables reserved for bridge: winner gets next week's entry fee paid.

Just my 2 cents

I understand and agree with you, John.
On the other hand, I like the idea of forum
members ponying-up with prize donations.
Gives it a homey/pot luck dinner feel.
I'd be willing to donate few cool items , as
I'm sure other members would.
Maybe a few more posters could add some input on the subject.

I PM'd Ron with some ideas on some "smalls" that I could donate. I have 1/2A size custom wheels and bell-cranks (like on my Rare-Bear).. My homemade Cox muffler kit... Stuff like that. Maybe some engine display stands?

Thanks Guys PM's replied to.

I'm kind of torn, while I agree with John, I do feel that many of us in this hobby have more than we need or could ever use.

That's not a jab at anyone in particular, just an observation. I also include myself in that description! So.....I will be donating some items. Not sure just what yet.

Anyway, maybe we can charge next time, but I would rather these things be kept simple.

Thanks Bob!

Roddie, bragging rights? You can't brag if you don't enter! I am sure Jim will allow the Rare Bear past the deadline.

All kidding aside Roddie, thank you for your donations. I am sure the recipients will be happy. I want to keep some of those things for myself!!!

Geeez.... I just replied (or should I say "wrote a book..") to poor Ron in a PM before reading the above. Ron probably needs therapy now.. Laughing Shocked

In short; The Rare Bear's engine needs attention.. and "life" has been throwing me curve-balls lately. The airplane's been hanging by it's stooge-hook since contest#1..

Donations needed 11-4-110

I neglected to run-in the engine enough before trying to fly it the first time.. I probably should have bench-run the new Tee Dee cylinder/piston set using a stock back-plate.. rather than that KB one... and then later worked out the draw-issues with the hard-tank, which just exacerbated the trouble I had with hard-starting.. and getting the thing to needle.

I'll have to pass.. this time guys. Thank You for extending me the opportunity.. and for your support. I'm working toward getting a fleet of airplanes ready for next season.. and the Rare-Bear will be flown then.. God willing. I'm in serious need of "handle-time".. with a stable airplane too. It's been too long since I've flown, to risk an unpredictable "wild ride" that the Rare-Bear could exhibit.

Roddie,

At worst, if the cylinder was not broken in then it would be a little erratic at peak. After 5 mins or so of run time this would go away. Cox engines don't really require a break in. At least not a long one.

I would suspect a reed issue, the KB backplate may not draw as well as a standard horse shoe, but it has never caused me any issues. Check to make sure the reed is able to move around.

Also, it could be the tank. Do you have one of those little Perfect ones laying around?

Ron

yea.. I'll definitely tear the engine down to check everything. There's a new Mylar reed in there.. and it seemed to pass my "blow/suck" method of checking the seal.. which usually exposes a faulty seal. I've had reeds "whistle" when sealing.. (blowing against it) Is this detrimental to proper function?

What I don't remember.. is if I used more than one shim under the glowhead. I was using a standard head.. and not a new one either. The fuel was not fresh... and I haven't bought any new stuff.

I ran a few tanks out.. (the uni's I built) so I don't think their at fault.. at least not on the ground. On one of my attempts at an official flight, a backfire loosened the prop.. and threw the snap-on plastic spinner off into the pavement.. cracking it. Guess what I had forgot to pack in my flight box? A small slotted screwdriver for the prop-screw.. Mad Being the resourceful chap that I am.. I used the side-blade of a nail-file on some clippers I keep on my car key chain, to tighten the prop back up. Getting it locked horizontal; coming up against a compression-stroke, was not an easy feat. I didn't forget my allen-key to adjust my handle though... Rolling Eyes

Roddie , if your still trying that engine ; I would suggest a Hi comp. Head if you have it and 2-3 shims to get rid of that too hi comp. that's why it backfired had that happen to me till I put my thinking cap on . If u don't have the head at least try more shims!?!? NOW BACK TO TOPIC >>> I don't have a lot but let me get breakfast and some pain pills in me and will see (I know I have more than I need) Eric Pumpkin
