Cox Engine of The Month
How old is too old?

How old is too old?
I have some SIG champion fuel that is about 15 years old. Is this still OK to use? It still smells strong and it works well in my black widow. I have not used it on any others as I bought some new 1/2A fuel. I am sure the Castor oil hasn't diminished but what about the Nitro? I also have a really old metal can of COX fuel prob late 60's maybe early 70's. It too smells strong, I have used a tiny bit for cleaning, but thought about running an engine with it. It looks funny, kind of a reddish color, but seeing as I was too young know what older fuel looked like when new lt may be normal. Thought it might be neat to run an old engine with original Cox branded fuel. Thoughts?

Well, I do know that the fuel can separate and or get water vapor in it. You can always give it a try. I found a can of fuel from the 80s and it did work, I only ran the engine once off so just in case the castor has separated or there was something really wrong with it, it wouldn't do much to the engine.
Re: How old is too old?
If it was sealed tightly in a metal or glass container, filter it and it's probably okay. If it was in plastic, the volatiles may have off-gassed, especially the nitromethane. Again, filter it and try it. If the weather isn't hot it'll probably work fine with low nitro.

Shake it up, filter it, and "LIGHT that Candle!"

Depending on the quantity of old fuel, if you have a LOT, it might be betst to use it as "weed-killer" in you driveway.
Why risk contaminating an engine and create possible problems?

I will if you dont want to.

We'll see, just wanted to know if the stuff was safe or not. I have a run of the mill product engine with not a ton of compression. Would be a good test subject. I will probably keep it away from my tee dees and pee wee's. Thanks all.

Exoect it to be a lot more messy because the nitro and the methanol may have partially evapourated but the castor wont have so you may have a way higher percentage.
