Help! TD needle valve body threaded insert R&R

Post  Cryhavoc Wed Mar 12, 2014 2:15 am

I recently received two TD .15 needle valve bodies. One arrived with the fuel nipple broken off. I was going to enlarge the hole and insert a small brass tube but the second one arrived intact except for the steel insert that is threaded for the needle.

What I would like to do now is pull the insert from the broken body and insert it into the intact one. I have some ideas on how to accomplish this but would like to hear from someone that has experience with this.

Thanks,
Mike

Help! Re: TD needle valve body threaded insert R&R

Hi, I have pulled a lot of inserts out of tank backed Bees.  It works the same for TD types.
Fashion a sleeve from a piece of brass tubing to fit over the outside diameter of the insert.  Make it long enough to allow the needle valve to screw into the insert several threads. (I use an old needle valve with the needle cut off to get it to screw in farther) Grease the threads, place a washer over the needle and screw it in until it touches the tubing. Dip the  assembly into some hot water to heat the aluminum body.(I heat the water in a foam cup using a microwave oven) Turning the needle valve in will pull the insert out. You'll be surprised at the minimum amount of torque needed.
To install, heat the body in hot water and press the insert in again using the needle screwed in several turns.
Make certain the fuel holes are lined up. I would use a small bench vise to squeeze the two parts together using a small sleeve to protect the nipple. You could also use a C-clamp to do the same. Hope this helps.  Very Happy

I never looked closly at mine and always assumed the needle screwed into a threaded section of the spray bar.... sounds like you think the threaded section is a pressed in iron sleeve that is threaded

If that is true the idea above may work... I would be inclined to find similar diameter complete NVA and adapt into the cox venturi

Any NVA from a .10 through .21 should fit and work fine IMO

Coxaddict, Thanks for the tips. I don't have any extra needles so I was hoping to avoid using one but..... I'll give it a go and see what happens.

Fred, There's no thinking there's a threaded insert about it. Its plainly visible. I've seen a break down somewhere that I can't recall. Maybe it was in a magazine article or forum somewhere but I remembered it enough to recall that pulling the insert can be done.

Mike I don't doubt what you see or have read...just curious to me why they would take the extra steps to do it that way, especially since Cox was so adroit at finding faster and cheaper methods on many of the product line

But then again, they were crafty at re-purposing war surplus so maybe they found a bunch of threaded pipe with the fine thread ID and figured they could save time using it

I sold all my .15s so do not have a TD to look at but I bet $5 a Norvel .061 NVA is nearly a direct drop in for not much $$
