W Filament Glow Heads

Where are these from and why were they made? And how rare are they? I've heard they're pretty rare but I've seem to come across 4 or 5 now in the short time I've been collecting. So what's the deal?

Aftermarket glow heads[edit]
1.Standard glow plug head—uses standard conventional glow plug—low compression—standard performance
2.Turbo glow plug head—low compression—medium performance
3.Norvel Freedom Glow Plug—high compression—high performance—rare and hard to get.
4.Galbreath Head with Nelson Plug Combo—high compression—high performance—most popular, gives the engine an immediate performance boost by up to 2,500 rpm depending on the engine.
5.Cox International Insert Style glow head—Available in both Standard and Texaco

do a quick search on this site for 'w' glowheads, theres a ton of info. They're not rare, but not real common, it was a cost savings attemp for product engines, 190 or 290

"W" filiament golw heads are more a curiosity than an item of monetary value like my porcelain "Champion" glo from the '50's"

I have a couple "W" filament Cox .049 glow-heads. I can't remember how I obtained them... or how they performed, if I ever ran them on an engine. I have so many "coil" filament heads.. that they're always what I used.

I assume the "W" filament is also made of Platinum because of it's incandescent properties... but there hasn't been any mention yet (in this thread...) of the "W" filaments' average longevity or performance.

I have a Cox .049 three-piece piston too... one of my Babe bee's is pretty old (probably pre-1960 anyway) and is probably where the W filament plugs came from/with.

I obtained one from my red eliminator. The engine looked fairly untouched but I can't say for sure it's original. The others however I got on my quest for thin wall cylinders. They all came on engines with thin wall cylinders. I can't say for sure this is a testament to their age, because it could just be a coincidence, but maybe there's something there.

I've got two, three piece pistons. One in my space bug, and one in my space bug jr. The jr has the early small thread head and the space bug has an early number one cylinder on it.

i think the 'w' was produced from '69-'72, i'll check when i get home tonite.

That's the correct dates, apparently the cost savings was not that great and performance was somewhat less, Cox went back to the coil filament once all stock was depleted.
